I've been paleo for about 1 year (low fat vegan for 1 year previous) and feeling really great, and of course, all of my ailments, allergies, etc. etc. were cured. I'm 100% strict and always have been; I've eaten pretty low carb since the beginning, but have gone super lowcarb in the past couple months.

When I was a vegan I was eating so much sugar (fruit) I'm surprised I don't have diabetes (don't know if this has anything to do with this now).

It has occurred mildly my whole life, but in the past year I have had body parts easily falling asleep (pins & needles, numbness) Several times a day, mostly when I sit down (go figure) For example, right now my legs are slightly numb. I've read this is a symptom of illnesses like diabetes or Lyme disease.

Anything to be concerned about?

Thanks for any input.

Pins and needles are probably neuropathy related to diabetes. The easiest thing to check is your HbA1c for diabetes. Does it feel electric or feel like there are fire crackers being unloaded? Also, autoimmune diseases could cause neuropathy.

Limbs going to sleep is probably due to nerve impingements, as said above. Do you have carpal or other joint-related symptoms from repeat motions?

That is one of the signs of hypothyroid. And I have read some people say that eating too few carbs can cause your thyroid to become sluggish. Though I wouldn't consider that the most likely answer unless you've got other hypothyroid symptoms as well.

Hey, thankyou! My mother has had hyperthyroidism since age 20, definitely a possibility. – Celton Aug 25 2011 at 22:41
He/she said hypo and you said hyper... Two different things. – saiklón Aug 25 2011 at 23:19
Very true, now I think about it I'm not even sure what one of the two she has. – Celton Aug 25 2011 at 23:23

Numbness and tingling is much more likely to be due to nerve impingement (structural abnormalities like a slipped/bulging spinal disk or muscular spasms) than diet.

An MRI might be required to reveal any musculoskeletal problems, although they aren't 100% reliable.

Diabetics often experience neuropathy, a death of nerve endings due to the glycating effects of chronically elevated blood glucose.

I would definitely recommend having a test to see what your fasting blood glucose and glucose response is if you suspect that you might be diabetic.
