Besides jerky and nuts, what should I buy to endure a power outage that may last a while?

Billerica Ma outside Concord, MA - crazy here too - lines 5 people deep at grocery stores, panicked people, crazy drivers. We have a generator and a freezer full of human-grade meat for the dog that can double as people food need be; sardines, canned salmon, nuts, frozen berries/fruit, canned coconut milk, coconut oil, olive oil, garden veggies we collected, water, beef jerky, eggs, frozen bacon (should cook), rice, rice crackers and fresh, long-fermented sourdough bread for nonpaleo members of family (and me if necessary), grass fed butter and cream, Dr. Kresser's sourdough buckwheat pancake starter. Our Wolf stove runs on propane so the burners will still work unless tank is damaged. We can fry most anything and then there's the grill - assuming no wind damage. Flooding is our main concern but Hurrican Bob 20 yrs ago gave us one week power outage and they predicted the same with Irene. So will iron work clothes for one week this time since not all outlets are on generator! Clean tub and fill with water for sanitary purposes (and to clean bathroom sink and toilet and to flush toilet if necessary). |

Coconut oil. Rice stores well if you eat it. Water should be stored as well. Get a camp stove so you can cook. |

Food has been mentioned: batteries, flashlight, weather alert radio, 5 gallon water container - or more, depending on number of people. |

Besides all the other foods mentioned, I plan on buying some applesauce and a few other glass jar-type fruits. |

Eggs, potatoes, fruits, some vegetables, cheese (the harder types) and perhaps some rice if you think it is going to last. |

My daughter lives in the Virgin islands. She keeps pouches of salmon on hand. |

Go and see for yourself. Read the suggestions here and just have a great time for a few days without electricity apart from civilization somewhere in deep nature. That's how I would like to find out what I need during those times and get used to it. So you ensure you know what to do in case of emergency. |

I think getting some coconut milk would be a good call for quick calories. Make sure you have lots of water as well! I was about to ask this question too! |

I just don't want my ass handed to me so at this point getting things cooked and stored in the fridge, hope power stays on, and getting entertainment items prepped. Will fill extra water bottles tomorrow. Staying safe is a top priority so what I eat can take a back seat when my city goes into lockdown and things are scarce. Seriously lucky that I shopped earlier in the week and happened to go to the Trader Joe's early this morning - it was insanity in there.. Basically keep it like you were camping and remember you don't need ice for whiskey to be tasty :) |

to add to what has already been said:
a small petrol generator is golden, to provide power for lights, tv (for news) and your freezer (who wants to loose hundreds of dollars worth of good meat?) connect the freezer to it periodically so things don't warm up too much. as for bottles of water? better are 20l (5-6 gallon) solid plastic water containers. I have two of them and keep them filled at all times, and the best part is I incorporate them into my workouts at home - I use them for dumbbell squats! http://goo.gl/wumAk |

You know damn well that "Grok" would have looted given the chance, so if there's a widespread power outage go grab all the grass fed beef you can find (neighbors freezer, whole food store, farmer's pasture). Then have loot some firewood and have a feast! |

I'm gonna just sit in meditation during the storm, venture out when the looting starts to get in on a little bit of the action then just go back into meditation for a while til the power comes back on and I can go on paleohacks again. Plenty of dried meat and canned fish for if I get hungry. |
