Has anyone had this issue from having dairy? I had such bad cramps I rested very little last night and today, I have tendernes and pain on the left side4 under the loest rib.
I had the EXACT same thing and it was from Greek yogurt. I haven't had any problems with regular yogurt. I don't have a clue what was going on, but it stopped when I stopped eating it. So, you're not insane, but I don't know what specifically about it was causing the problem. Try regular yogurt or kefir and see if it happens again.
I don't think the pain you felt was due to the fact it was greek yogurt. I think after a long period of abstaining from dairy, your body was adjusting a bit to the bacteria and enzymes in yogurt. You could try having diary in its unfermented form, which is whole unpasteurized milk.
I could be wrong, but unless you are severely lactose intolerant, I don't think the cramps you are feeling are a result of having dairy. Did you have problems with dairy before going paleo? Generally, if you didn't have issues with it before, dairy is fine to have in VERY moderation while on paleo. Have you been drinking enough water? When I get cramps in my body, it's usually because I haven't stretched out good enough before/after a workout OR because my body hasn't gotten enough water.
The only difference between Greek and plain yogurt is that the whey liquid (which contains a lot of protein) is removed from the Greek to make it thicker. You can essentially make your own Greek yogurt by straining regular yogurt through a coffee filter.
If you're going to eat yogurt and want the protein, then stick to plain. But to be honest, I think dairy in general might be your issue.
I have the same response to cow dairy after eliminating it for a very long time due to my breastfeeding daughter's intolerance. I suppose I just don't tolerate it. The acne I had since I was 12 pretty much cleared up when I dropped it. I may tolerate goat milk products ( I once ate a yogurt and had no problems) but I am too chicken to try due to the potential pain.
I thought the main difference between Greek yogurt and regular yogurt is the fat content, which is achieved by using both cream and milk, and straining the yogurt to remove excess water.
This might explain the cramps or digestive distress since you're eating a lot more milk fat than you would if you were eating regular yogurt. For example FAGE full-fat Greek yogurt has 2.3g of fat per ounce (12g of total fat per 5.3oz), whereas Danon "plain" yogurt (I think this is their full-fat stuff) has 1g of fat per ounce (8g fat in an 8oz serving). So the Greek yogurt has more than twice as much fat by volume.
Different yogurts use different cultures, but I think that this would have more of an affect on the yogurt itself rather than your digestion.
