My first post here. Male, 45, 180lbs, 5'11, paleo for 6 mo.
7 years ago, I was 40lbs overweight and diagnosed on a routine VA checkup as hypothyroid with a TSH of 35. I had no symptoms, no hashimoto's, no radiation/surgery/or other causes. VA said, 'it happens a lot'.
I was put on Synthroid and dosage adjusted for 2 years until my TSH was around 3. Over the next several years, I continued gaining weight, was put on high BP meds, high trig meds, had gout monthly, and was borderline diabetic with fasting glucose around 120. Diagnosed with NA Fatty liver Disease, too. And, started using a CPAP for sleep apnea.
3 years ago, I seriously started dieting low fat, high carb CW diet based on advice from VA. I managed to lose, but yo-yo'd and felt like crap.
In Oct 2010, I went full bore Primal Blueprint. So far have lost 50 lbs, gained lots of muscle, got off BP and Trig meds, no gout since Nov 2010. CPAP is on lowest setting, but still use it because I snore like a train if I don't. The only medicine I'm taking is Synthroid .15mcg. My TSH was .55 last month and all other labs nearly optimal. No sign of NAFLD.
Two weeks ago, I started breaking my Synthroid tablets in half, thinking I will get tested in a few months and see what happens. The VA says I will have to take Synthroid the rest of my life as the thyroid never heals.
What do you paleo hacks think of this?
"What do you paleo hacks think of this?"
I think you are on the right track. Your story sounds amazing. Celebrate your victories and progress at every moment. With respect to thyroid, based on the info given, yes it is not only possible but likely that you have a potentially-functional thyroid "lying in wait", ready for the appropriate environment so they can gradually get back to work. But take it slow and steady and realize that progress may not always be in a linear/straight trajectory. "Low and slow." Good luck!
I can't weigh in from medical or personal experience, but my mother has had some pretty severe thyroid issues. One book that helped her define and reduce her issues was Dr Datis Kharrazian's "Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms?".
If you haven't checked it out yet, it's an excellent resource and one of the only thyroid books that I would consider in line with Primal/Paleo. He covers the multiple mechanisms for depressed thyroid function including gluten driven autoimmunity, physical stress induced low thyroid function, etc and outlines protocols for dealing with each scenario.
Since I don't know the cause of your low thyroid function (and am not a doctor) I can't say if your case could be reversible, but after reviewing the various mechanisms presented by Kharrazian, I'd say it's a potential and definitely worth a try- it wouldn't be the first time that conventional wisdom/doctor's assumptions were wrong.
You might want to check out the latest podcast from Chris Kresser since he spends some time talking about thyroid issues.
I was told I was Hypoythyroid after blood work about 2 years ago and was taking Armor Thyroid once I was on Paleo for about a month the taking the Armor starting giving me anxiety so I just stopped taking it.
Long story short I'm no longer hypothyroid. The thyroid is the "canary in the coal mine," it's usually the first thing to go when there is an issue.
UPDATE 2/6/12 - My TSH levels have risen to unacceptable level over the last 4-5 months. It is now 4.5 and T3 and T4 both at bottom end of ref range. My feet are cold all the time and weight loss has stalled correspondingly.
I have a doctor appt tomorrow and will try to get a prescription for Natural Dessicated Thyroid and not Synthroid.
Seems strange it took so long for my thyroid function to bottom out. Could the Synthroid have stayed in my system for so long?
When this all started, The Quilt gave me some advice : "You can try to get off thyroid meds, but if you experience stalls look for another bullet". Guess he was right!
I too have started breaking my pills in half. I thought about taking a full pill very other day but worry i will completely forget. When I took the every other day route - i felt the worst after I took the pill and great on days i didn't.. but it might be in my head..
How do you feel? I really want to get off of the pills too as I do not have access to bio-identical ones (pig/bovine). Have you had your numbers tested again to see if there was any difference.
I am going to keep with my 1/2 pill until my new test in a month and see..
Just a follow up on the original post since someone revived this question: I completely stopped taking Synthroid on Aug 5th. I was tested for TSH on Sep 5th, and the results were perfectly normal. My TSH was 2.3, normal range is approx 1-5. I am so happy, but kind of mad I was taking a synthetic hormone for 6 years when I really just needed a good clean paleo diet.
I'm on 75 mcg my level is and has been for the past year at a 1. I have been debating the same thing. My doc said I have to stay on it but I feel great now. Not sure yet what I'm going to do and since my track record of eating clean hasn't been great I will probably stay on it.
Synthroid targets T4 and does not account for T3. It is also synthetic, which is a whole other issue. I take Armour Dessicated (Porcine) Thyroid along with some Raw Thyroid and Raw Adrenal supplements made from animal parts. The combination is working well. I hope to eventually wean off of the Armour. Maybe you can request Armour from your doc or find a doc that will prescribe it. I think the body has the ability to heal, but only with the proper tools.
