New York Times article reports on research that nonalcoholic beer contributes to recovery of marathon runners.

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/24/nonalcoholic-beer-aids-marathon-recovery/

The author states that only nonalcoholic beer has this effect but from the description, this research didn't test alcoholic beer (because it would have been "impossible" for a marathon runner to drink a liter and a half of beer per day [ha!]. Also interesting that they attribute the effect to polyphenols.

As a low-carber that plays soccer, I'll occasionally get a sorghum beer after a game. Interestingly, I don't get the middle of the night leg cramps when I have a beer post-game. Even added it to my ritual.

So why not beer after exercise?

My English husband used to run marathons (in London) and would always head to the local pub afterwards... – Dragonfly Aug 26 2011 at 22:02
What perfectly corroborating evidence! – wjones3044 Aug 27 2011 at 16:59

Middle of the night leg cramps could be a cause of dehydration. I used to get them and it was/is related directly to dehydration.

So maybe the sorghum bear gives you enough hydration to not get the cramps, or maybe it is some magically source of greatness.

Dehydration is definitely an issue. Didn't drink enough water last night and no amount of beer could help me. – wjones3044 Aug 27 2011 at 17:01
