The locals charge same as grocery store. I haven't found one with significant saving vs the farmers market yet – Stephen-Aegis Jun 13 2010 at 11:13

I recently purchased a 1/4 cow from a local Chicagoland farm, and it's costing 3.15/lb hanging weight. This should come out to between 5-6 dollars a pound. But of course this includes your higher priced cuts like Fillets and Roasts, as well as 40-50 lbs of ground beef. Since the higher priced cuts usually cost you between 10-20/lb for grass-fed, I definitely feel like it's the only way to go if you can afford the up front costs.

I'm in the Chicago area too - would you mind letting me know which farm you ordered from? – Earache Jun 16 2010 at 17:44
Somehow I missed your comment...better late than never! I ordered from Meadow Haven Organic--> meadowhavenfarm.com I met them at the Green City Market and really liked their philosophy. Picked up my 1/4 a couple weeks ago and everything has been delicious so far! Now I'm just waiting for my half hog from them. – Jordan Aug 3 2010 at 23:26

We found a local farmer through word of mouth and only ended up paying $3.15/lb for the entire cow. I think the craigslist idea was great. Also, there might be local organizations for very small producers that can point you to someone willing to sell to you at a reduced rate.

Good luck!

We checked craigs list and found some for around $4/lb.

I'm in NC and I've been quoted "probably" around $6 -$6.50/lb for a whole cow split 3 ways. Don't think that covers the slaughter/butcher fees though.

Where are you? Close to source helps I think.

North Georgia... – Stephen-Aegis Jun 13 2010 at 1:14
Calling farms is the best way to go. The cheapest farms won't be spending $$$ on websites. I bought a lamb for $5/lb...it was a steal! – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Jun 13 2010 at 14:56

These guys are $4/lb, unsure about delivery charges.

It's $4 a pound, but keep in mind that's the 'hanging weight' of the beef. not necessarily what you'll end up getting. – rjorgenson Jun 14 2010 at 11:07
