(Disclaimer) I love coffee and do not want to quit drinking it; however, whenever I drink it on an empty stomach, my gut aches until I either drink milk or eat a carb-filled meal. Does anyone else have this problem? Should I just always have a huge breakfast.
First things that come to mind:
Acidity may be a concern, but I have read where acidity in coffee causing upset stomach is not quite true. That will be for you to decide. Read here for a start - http://www.portlandroastingblog.com/2009/09/coffeeacidity/
What quality coffee are you buying? The stuff in a gas station is like motor oil and would kill my stomach. (At least Hess now carries Dunkin Donuts which is actually an ok brand in a pinch...) Good coffee makes a difference!
Also, you can play with the roasts to see if mild vs. bold makes a difference.
Assuming you're like me and drink it first thing in the morning, my Joe-Belly remedy is drinking a large glass of water first thing and adding heavy cream...to the coffee, not the water:> Food always fixes it.
I use almond milk (yes yes I know, boo on me) or coconut milk (I make my own). If you don't do dairy, I definitely suggest making homemade coco milk- much cheaper than the stores and without the guar gum/BPA lining in the cans.
How about drinking the coffee AFTER breakfast? Or at least with the food. I´ve found the that the finer ground your coffee beans (or how finely ground you buy them) the harder they are on your stomach. If you brew your coffee in a pot with fairly coarse ground beans (much how you would make tea) it will make a very nice cup o´jo that´s easy on the stomach.
I drink a lot of coffee with an empty stomach. I buy quality coffee to start, or a coffee chicory blend, and i will have a very small piece of very dark chocolate like Green & Black's 70 or 84
It's just enough to temper the ouch.
