Thursday I'll have a new big batch of frozen, grass-fed beef. In the meantime, I'm stuck. I went to the health food store, didn't like what was left. Went to the supermarket and saw :

  • Irish beef (I tried it in the past, it's good, but not like grass-fed beef)
  • Bison (coming from the USA, I'm from Belgium, I'm hesitating because I know nothing about the source)
  • Kangourou (coming from Southern Africa, I don't think I have the guts to try it out)

I can also eat cod from time to time, but I'm not a big fish fan (I want my zinc!).

What would you do?

I went with the bison and was surprised : it tastes just like grass-fed beef. I cooked it way too long though. Won't do that today. – Korion Aug 30 2011 at 6:49

The bison is probably entirely grain fed. Some bison is not, but you would be rolling the dice. The Irish beef is mostly grass fed (and some sileage in the winter).

I don't think the EU allows meat with GH or antibiotics. A couple of days of grain fed bison wouldn't worry me much - I'd probably go with whatever is cheaper.

Oops, didn't see your response to Kikilula. If its wild bison, then it's grass fed! – Dave S. Aug 29 2011 at 12:26
I think it is, yes. I'm gonna browse on the website a bit more, but it looks way more natural than the other meat in the supermarket. Irish beef has the darkest color but isn't very tasty. – Korion Aug 29 2011 at 12:35

Kangaroo meat is really worth a try. It's a relatively lean meat and the best way I could describe it is, "game-y chicken". Very nice grilled, and even better on a BBQ.

Just don't think of Skippy when you're eating. :)

I may try it tomorrow. It would be kinda fun to make a video of it and send it to all those Australian vegans ^^ I gotta say I got a weird feeling about eating kangaroo. – Korion Aug 29 2011 at 15:32

Horse meat, wild duck, lamb, venison, eggs...

Those should be available in Belgium.

Can't find duck, lamb, venison. I already eat eggs, I want some meat too. Horse meat comes from california, and I'd rather have some bison then. – Korion Aug 29 2011 at 12:06
