I have been under 20g carbs per day, Im 5'10 148! female... I started over a month a ago at 145... I have been in crazy ketosis, eating around 1900 calories per day.... crossfit 2x week, running and sprints 2-3x per week... most of my calories are coming from fat, but I haven't lost a frigging pound or an inch! In fact i'm bigger than ever! I have tons of energy, but my clothes are sooo tight... Im sleeping well, I feel great, but I really want to drop 10-15 lbs... NOT GAIN!!! errrrrrghhhhh! Im sooo frustrated. I log my calories, fat, protein, exercise... I should be losing... I just don't get it..
This looks like the classic overtraining problem. You're working out 5 days a week on only 1900 cals a day. That's enough to tell your body to store all the energy it can because you're going way too hard. 1900 cals with 20g carbs is great, but that's with zero working out. Real life is not like The Biggest Loser, the best way to cut weight is ketogenic low carb diet and lots of rest.
I find that when I'M keto, I'm no where near that hungry. So I'm going to agree that you are probably over training and need to use that lack of hunger that is natural for ketosis, to include intermittant fasting. I usually don't start eating until sometime between 11 am or 1 pm (depending on what my other activities/schedule is for the day). I stop by 7 or 8 pm. I tend to consume between 1000 - 1700 calories and am NEVER hungry! I see really good results from this. I still sometimes hit a plateau . Just wait (weight) it out. Don't over train. I do about a 10 minute weight routine 2x's/week, yoga about 4 x'/wk and maybe 10-20 minutes of calisthenics or fast walking 1-2 x's/wk (but I often skip this; I'm rather lazy... ) 2 weeks ago, I decided to try that whole "carb load" thing. HUGE mistake!!! Massive gastro upset, sluggish, tired, felt REALLY sick, gained weight. I will NEVER do that again. I am committed to living keto from here on out. I may not get to the weight I want, but my shape and size is getting better and that's more important. And muscle does weigh 3x's more than fat! (YAY)
Fat is the easiest macronutrient to put on fat, in energy terms it takes like 4% energy to store fat and 25% energy to store carbs, protein is probably close to carbs.
Jimmy Moore has rebounded up and down for awhile so low carb fail? I think so.
If you want to lose weight eat more carbs, you don't got to go bananas just do it intuitively. A good goal is 100-150g or more depending on the type of exercise you do.
If you are doing crossfit, gnarly style, no way is 20g enough, more like 300g of carbs.
Hmm, no real way to phrase this delicately, but when people go VLC it's not uncommon for them to suffer from some degree of constipation.
Body composition, not weight is what matters, and that takes time to change. 3 pounds is well within the norm for fluctuation, especially if you're a woman.
It's more accurate to measure yourself/keep a photo journal rather than stepping on the scale, but if you notice that you keep gaining weight (that isn't just a bloated belly), then I suggest you switch things up.
EDIT; oddly enough, Diet Doctor, a LCHF Paleo-orientated blog illustrated this rather dramatically in a post today.
Agh @cavegirl I'm going through the same thing! It's driving me mad! And I don't know what to do lol! I'm scared of kicking myself out of ketosis and trying something else like paleo (which I pretty much was before but still couldn't kick the few kilos that seem adamant on taking up permanent residence upon my thighs lol) because after allll I've read about ketosis it should be working Uggggh! And maaan do we count calories or not!? And I looove exercise I don't wanna stop haha I'm so confused, as this rambled post makes clear haha. I'm 22, female, 5.1" and eating around 10-20g carbs a day and around 1700cal give or take a few hundred due to exercise/overindulgence in buttery-delicious-keto-cookies lol!
