My sister started eating paleo a few months ago and has noticed that her belly button piercing (of which she's had for 7 years+) has started to become really sore and irritating. To the point which she has to take the bar out sometimes (she has lots of different bars so its not one particular one).

Any idea why this would happen?

My girlfriend is a piercer. I'll ask her and get back to you. – oo Aug 31 2011 at 0:14
I'll be perfectly honest and say exactly the same has happened to me. I've been paleo-ing for years, had the piercing for twelve years and when I go ultra "clean" on the diet I notice an infection, which just needs a day or so of tending to with a tea-tree antiseptic. I thought it was just me... – Harry Aug 31 2011 at 12:26

If she's increased her workouts recently, it could be irritation from chafing or sweating.

She may have gotten something in her piercing to irritate it. I've had my nipple piercings for 8 years, and on occasion something will get under there to make it sore. Regular cleaning tends to nip that in the butt.

Totally agree. I've had some of my piercings for 17 years (wow, has it been that long! Oy I'm old!) and something as tiny as a single piece of sand can just annoy the hell out of it. – A at Grain Free Diet Aug 31 2011 at 2:30
I'm still blown away that I've had mine for 8! It's so easy to forget about them. – Gingernaut Aug 31 2011 at 16:26

Has she tried non-metal bars?

actually I'm not sure, but I find it interesting that she's been fine with whichever bars she has had in for 7+ years... do you think perhaps the body was more inflamed overall before and she's only noticing the soreness now because its an acute inflammation rather than chronic? – Paleo_BLaZeDRas Aug 30 2011 at 20:53
I'll link her this question so she can answer specific questions herself – Paleo_BLaZeDRas Aug 30 2011 at 20:53
Sometimes people develop allergies over time... she might of just developed a metal intolerance (I developed an allergy to coconut at age 23...this shiz happens) – Erin H Sep 6 2011 at 15:01

It's possible that her immune system is now stronger and therefore her body is rejecting the foreign object.
