I've been eating eggs (almost) every day for the past 2 months (4 egg yolks and 1 egg white every day). I removed the egg yolks because I heard of the anti-nutrients in the egg whites. Eggs are cheap, tasty, handy, ...

Unfortunately, there is only one thing that needs to be fixed in my health, and that's constipation. I often hear constipation is caused by food intolerances, and egg intolerance is quite common. And please don't try to convince me it's not the eggs : I tried EVERYTHING to stop being constipated, I tried magnesium, tried coconut oil, aloe vera, pau d'arco extract (worked quite well but when I drink too much of it I get loose stools), ... It HAS to be the eggs, unless non-grass-fed beef causes constipation (I'm getting grass-fed beef tomorrow).

I'm totally prepared to give them up, but I need answers to some questions first.

  • Currently I don't eat chicken or pork. Would it be best to replace eggs with chickens, or maybe kangourou? It's almost impossible to find chicken here that hasn't been fed grains. The kangourou is wild but really expensive. I'm trying to find a healthier alternative to eggs, basically.
  • Could hard-boiling the eggs instead of eating scrambled eggs be the answer to my problem?
  • What fish are damn healthy and inexpensive?

UPDATE : On a sidenote : I eat random broccoli/green beans/spinach/zucchini at every meal, I eat eggs in the morning, beef at lunch and beef at dinner (lately I've eaten some bison and some kangaroo too), I eat 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil at every meal (extra virgin) and I cook with virgin coconut oil. I supplement quite a lot at the moment, the full list can be found here : http://www.healingnaturallybybee.com/articles/supp7.php As I was severely vitamin D deficient I supplement 5000IU every day now. I might remove the cod liver oil one day as I won't be eating that many eggs anymore.

UPDATE 2 : I discovered my calcium supplement is actually a blend of citrate and carbonate. I won't take it for a while, but will continue supplementing vitamin D. I will also take magnesium on an empty stomach before going to sleep. Yesterday evening, I decided to take a probiotic (GR8-Dophilus) and it worked wonders (I had to go to the toilet immediately and woke up 2 more times to go to the toilet). I've also decided to add a bit more fat to my diet, and a bit more fiber (I was starting to get lazy so I was cutting back on vegetables). I'll often do an IF so I don't throw vegetables away (I have a mold allergy and tend to throw rests away). I'll update this post next week. I've cut out eggs btw, but will reintroduce them next week if my constipation went away (to make clear whether or not it's the eggs).

What sort of calcium supps are you taking? Carbonate has been known to contribute to constipation. I was constipated even after going on Paleo, the only thing that fixed it was taking probiotics. Now, even though I don't always get the RDA of fiber, I still have normal BM's every morning. Try changing to a calcium citrate supp and take a probiotic with your dinner every day. – Nemesis Aug 31 2011 at 11:23

I can't speak for Nemesis, but I've been very pleased with Enzymatic Therapy IC drugstore.com/… I picked them up on a sale and have been pleasantly pleased. I didn't take them for constipation though. I'm trying to heal my intestines after a very thorough glutening. They've done well. – A at Grain Free Diet Aug 31 2011 at 11:45

Er, sorry. That's Enzymatic Therapy Pearls IC. – A at Grain Free Diet Aug 31 2011 at 11:46

Enzymatic Pearls are the best...it is the only supplement I currently take and I can tell when I have not. – BaconHealsChic Aug 31 2011 at 12:08

If you truly feel eggs are your problem, remove them all together for 2 weeks. If you don't have constipation then it was the eggs. I don't know what your daily diet looks like so I can't tell you if it's something else. Please post your daily meals so that we can all help you better. Are you eating anything else with your eggs?

I personally found that cutting eggs improved by gut and wellbeing, so go for it. They also accounted for the vast majority of my o6 intake, despite being a small part of my diet (12 per week or so). Thoroughly cooking (indeed, utterly obliterating) the eggs I did eat seemed to help.

That said, I'm not sure that it has to be eggs. It could be the absence of something: too few carbs, too little fibre, too little water, too little physical activity, disturbed gut flora etc.

Any oily fish is healthy, lots of lean white fishes are pretty lacking in nutrients (like chicken, which I wouldn't bother with either). Sardines, mackerel etc. are normally cheap.

I don't move around a lot, I have exams. I only go outside to get food. I don't eat that many carbs no, but then again, I'm VLC. Water intake is totally fine. There is one thing that might be stupid though : I supplement calcium/magnesium, but I also supplement vitamin D. Maybe I have too much calcium interfering with magnesium? – Korion Aug 31 2011 at 11:15
Well, you shouldn't take magnesium and calcium at the same time. (Why are there so many combo supplements of Cal/Mag?). Magnesium is absorbed best by itself on an empty stomach. Bedtime is a good time to take it as it tends to relax muscles and help with sleep. – Dave S. Aug 31 2011 at 12:25
If you have exams then you should add stress to the list. I second Dave S- I keep magnesium supplements as far away from food as possible- first thing in the morning in my case. – David Moss Aug 31 2011 at 14:35
That already seems like a good idea. I've taken a probiotic yesterday, I immediately had to go to the toilet. – Korion Sep 1 2011 at 13:25

I eat 5 whole raw eggs a day. I've tried removing the whites on three different occasions and always get constipated. I would bet if you put the whites back in you'll see a change.

Really??? That'd be great, cuz I just found a great source of eggs at the market last sunday. I ran out of votes, so I can't vote for your answer atm. I will first try removing the eggs for a week, then I'll try adding them back in with the egg whites. Would also mean that I waste less good food :). – Korion Aug 31 2011 at 13:53
Yeah, I read about all the reasons you can't eat raw whites but I've been doing it for years and when I remove them I don't do as well so go figure. – Jeff Aug 31 2011 at 19:08
Papaya is also known for relieving constipation (and has lots of vitamin c). I make a custard with papaya, butter, a little raw honey, and 2 raw (whole) eggs. It's really tasty and I consider it to be extremely healthy... lately I've also been adding in some gelatin powder (doesn't really change the taste) but I did it for years without. – Jeff Aug 31 2011 at 19:35

I cannot speak to how/whether eggs contribute to your constipation. However, I have experienced a significant amount of constipation and tried various forms of relief. Mag Citrate never worked all that well for me. I have started getting a daily dose of inulin (chicory root, etc) and have no issues with constipation. Ever. I understand you don't want to start supplementing with probiotics, but both probiotics and prebiotics come in forms other than supplements. Cause for constipation is usually not enough fat or disbiosis. Since yolks are fatty, I find it surprising that it may cause constipation. You may want to add more fat to your diet, a bit more fiber (but not too much), for instance one apple a day, and eat more vegetables. I see that you already go in that direction, but still, its worth mentioning.

I wouldn't recommend giving up eggs - they are high in choline, essential nutrient for proper energy metabolism and memory and some other very nice stuff.

I would also suggest Vitamin C as ascorbic acid powder , 4-10g per day or more, up to diarrhea. Helps soften stools, a lot and clean endotoxin buildup caused by hi fat diet. Improves digestion by killing h. pylori and pathogenic intestinal bacteria. You may get flatulence but it will pass. Works the same as lactulose but much better since it improves immunity and is anti-everything. Bosts carnitine too, for proper fat utilisation.

Constipation is often the result of food intolerance. I was already eating tons of fat, I was already taking vitamin C, I was already eating quite a lot of fiber (though probably not enough). I think it was mostly lack of movement (I'm in exams). I'm still experimenting, but I'm now sure it wasn't the eggs. – Korion Sep 11 2011 at 15:43
Perhaps serotonin deficiency ? Maybe you should try 5-HTP or to increase starch intake (VLC might have side effects). Starch might improve tryptophan absorption. – majkinetor Sep 11 2011 at 20:15
Also, how much of vitamin C did you take ? – majkinetor Sep 12 2011 at 9:58

I've had this before when I was eating around two eggs a day [it didn't matter how they were prepared but hard boiled was definitely the worst offender and scrambled less so].

I just have to go egg-turkey for a week or so and I get a sort of reset.

I know it's been commented here to myself that I should re-undergo allergy testing for this; but I personally just think too much of a good thing is really just that.

As for the healthy fish: sardines, mackeral, sild, sardines. Fresh if you can, but high quality tinned if you can't.

I'll let someone who knows more about the potential chemicals leaching into your food from the tins follow up on the recommendations of weekly consumption of such foodstuffs. [Mainly because I'm at work and being damn lazy...] :)

You can try the eggs poached or raw. That may help.

Eggs always give me weird constipation, cooked or raw doesn't matter.

Regarding your constipation, this seems to be a problem for VLC's probably because of the lack of plant food, I would add in sources of soluble fiber like fruits and tubers too see if that alleviated some of the problems.

I absolutely don't want to eat fruit or tubers. I can up my vegetable intake, but I think fruit and tubers, while they would help constipation, will make other things worse. – Korion Aug 31 2011 at 12:59
Why? Are you severely overweight? – cliff Aug 31 2011 at 17:36
No ^^, I'm recovering from bad health by going VLC. Eating fruit slows down my progress tremendously. – Korion Sep 1 2011 at 13:26
what about starch? – cliff Sep 1 2011 at 18:30
Korion, don't listen to BEE, she thinks all carbs are bad no matter what. I got tons better when I got off her program and slowly introduced tubers. I still can't handle fruit though. – ROB Sep 11 2011 at 18:59

Ok based on what you have told me with your meals definitely try cuting out eggs for 2 weeks. I would also suggest if that doesn't work to add Super Enzymes to you supplements. You don't always need them but they will help with the digestion of you protiens.

link text

Try the following: Start with removing the eggs. This will show you whether it's the eggs or not Then if problem still happens add the super enzymes Finally increase your plant intake of drk green veggies (Kale is one of my personal favorites)

Remember that you should try things for at least 2 weeks to know if things have changed in your body. If you find that by just removing the eggs you are better. I would tell you to still try and increase your plant intake (seems a little low). Also once you have the problem under control that doesn't mean that you don't have eggs ever again. It could mean you have other issues in the body that are just being amplified by the eggs. This points to eggs being the issue when it could just be your body is still healthing.

Please keep us informed

You know, I've never found kale in any supermarket. I don't know why, everyone keeps talking about kale kale kale but I can't find it. I'll make updates regularly. – Korion Sep 1 2011 at 13:29

Eggs cause Constipation. Eggs where always used to 'bind' the stools when one suffered from Diarrhoea. If you are even slightly prone to Constipation you should keep eggs to the minimum.

I removed them from my diet, though stress seemed to be the biggest issue, not eggs. Thanks! – Korion Jan 11 2012 at 8:36

the egg yolks are the fattiest part of the egg, and the whites contain protein as well, which is why when people diet, they eat only egg whites because the yolk is actually pretty fattening. (mostly good fat, but at 4 egg yolks a day, not ideal...) it is very common for people so experience egg intolerance, but it usually has the opposite of the effect you think it has on you. take the eggs out for a few weeks and see....
