Nuts lead to binges.

Even better than Greek yogurt is Labneh. It is even thicker and has an even higher fat content. I have it for breakfast every day with cinnamon and a drizzle of really good extra virgin olive oil. The olive oil is traditional with labneh and tastes almost like honey in contrast with the tartness of the labneh. They sell it in Trader Joe as Yogurt cheese. Otherwise search out any local middle eastern grocery which almost certainly will have it. – Pelle Feb 16 2010 at 17:30

Seaweed - http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/14/dining/14mini.html

Crackling -if you render your own tallow or lard, save the leftovers and sprinkle them with salt (or NoSalt) and cinnamon for a tasty snack

Choco-lard - heat 100% cacao chocolate, butter, coconut oil, and tallow/lard in a pan, cool, break into chunks - store in the freezer for chocolate consistency, in the fridge for fudge consistency. Can be sweetened with Stevia or honey if you like, but my sweet tooth is long gone.

Powerballs - same as above, only mix in crushed nuts and roll into ping-pong sized balls before storing in the fridge

I think that high purity dark chocolate is a good snack, since it is high in fat. Of course, the lower the purity of the dark chocolate the more sugar is probably added. I've been gradually working my way up from 85%, to 86%, and then 88% recently by trying different brands like Lindt's and Ghiradelli. Now, the pure 100% dark chocolate is probably the most optimal you can get in bar format, but if you are not use to it the taste, it is quite bitter with a woody flavor.

You can look online for things like cacao nibblets, which are small bits of raw cacao. Those are probably the closest to the natural form you can get. I'm sure the Mayans and Aztecs ate a lot of the stuff.

I like:

  • Tinned sardines in olive oil (not canola!)
  • Cheese (Not "orthodox" Paleo, I know)
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Sausages from local German deli

Also, nowadays, when traveling, I would rather just fast and endure some discomfort then eat the sh*t on airplanes or the stuff available at gas stations.

My kids love coconut popsicles... blend coconut milk w/a little banana and freeze in popsicle mold. You can adjust the amount of banana based on your own preference for sweetness/carbs. Even SAD consuming play date friends who reject other snacks such as strained full fat yogurt as having "no flavor" (ei: no sugar...) like these pops!

For a savory snack: cut celery in bite sized pieces, fill with cream cheese and top with smoked fish and chives. I served these as an appetizer for a brunch I hosted over the weekend - they were demolished and no one missed the crackers!

dude, learn to live without delicacies. if nuts trigger binges for you, avoid the chocolate. nuts and chocolate are delicacies to me because i like having special occasion foods (cheating the paleo way with a cup of nuts after a huge success). go with hardboiled eggs with some salt. it fills me right up.

Straight up spoonful of virgin organic coconut oil if you're looking to stop a craving of anything in it's tracks.

If you're actually looking to snack, home-made deer jerky is a winner hands-down.

3rd the dark chocolate. I like Green & Black's 85% Dark chocolate or Lindt 90 Dark. I have at least 1 oz per day. I used to be a huge consumer of homemade (I love to bake) baked goodies. I'd usually have at least 2 types of pies in the fridge at all times. I'm glad I'm done with that. Dark chocolate is my saviour!!

I second dark chocolate. I recently discovered Lindt 90% (having been a fan of their 85 and 99%) and it is truly excellent. I actually reviewed it on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Lindt-Excellence-Chocolate-3-5-Ounce-Packages/dp/B002RBOCZE/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1265047810&sr=8-16

Make homemade chocolate with coconut oil and store it in the fridge or freezer. A little cocoa and a little coconut oil will make your hungry go away!

Here's a recipe!

Use stevia instead of rapadura and cocoa instead of carob and you're good to go!

Lara Bars!!!!! I recently found these, and am so completely happy. I keep a few in my purse, as I'm out and about, so that my blood sugar doesn't get too low and I end up eating non-paleo.

From the website: "LÄRABAR is a delicious blend of unsweetened fruits, nuts and spices - energy in its purest form. Made from 100% whole food, each flavor contains no more than eight ingredients. Pure and simple, just as nature intended."

Gluten, Dairy, and Soy free. Reading the ingredients on the label is totally refreshing: (from the Cocoa Mole flavor) dates, almonds, walnuts, unsweetened cocoa powder, cinnamon, and chili.

Is Lärabar unprocessed?
Lärabar is made by what we consider to be a simple process: by which fruit, nuts, and spices are mixed and pressed together. They are not cooked, baked, or otherwise ‘processed’ and we use whole ingredients, as close to their natural state as possible.

Does Lärabar have added vitamins, minerals or supplements?
No. Lärabar only contains the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients inherent in the whole, natural ingredients we use – the way nature created it.

I find carrots work well due to their crunch.

Sardines in olive oil work for me.

Very interested in the Dark Chocolate as De Vany recommends it.

  • Coffee with a few ounces of cream
  • Cream with one or two teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa (adding a little 85% Lindt is also good)
  • Pemmican

Our local FM sells extremely tasty salmon jerky. I'm pretty much raising the kids on it.

Cost Plus sells 99% chocolate as well which I LOVE http://www.worldmarket.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3586884

Or a cup of warm coconut milk with a square of chocolate melted in it tends to set me up for the afternoon.

I make my own macadamia and coconut oil butter. I toss in some unsweetened coconut flakes for a little extra flavor. I usually spread this on a few pieces of celery. I also snack on a few steamed oysters with some Tabasco sauce.

Bacon. Cold pan-roasted chicken pieces. Or just wait 'til dinner.

I once wrote to the Utz company to ask that question and their reply was "Our pork rinds are rendered in their own fat." – speno Feb 13 2010 at 16:45

Depends on the purpose of the snack. If I am truly hungry, coconut oil is the best for quenching hunger. If I'm craving something crunchy, celery (with out without guacamole for dipping). Hot green tea is also great between meals.

  • coconut flakes
  • nori sheets

Well, it may not be totally legal but it satisfies the craving for chips when I get it. Take pepperoni slices and bake them until they are crispy- cool and crunch! Yummy! Just watch out where you get your salami.
