Pre-paleo I was a huge fan of chips and pizza. Yesterday, I ate ground, grass-fed beef for the first time and I was absolutely STUNNED by the taste. Literally blown away! Ground grass-fed beef is the best thing I've tasted in my life, and I'm being totally serious. It got me thinking. My goal is to replace every single fast food I was binging on pre-paleo by a paleo alternative. Preferable without nuts and fruit, and if possible without nightshades.

What was your favorite food before you went paleo, and do you have an alternative? (if your favorite food was already paleo, pick your second favorite food, and if that's paleo too, pick the next one and so on).

Use herbs freely! They add a lot of healthy compounds to the meal and they are extremely tasty. I never saw anyone use garden cress in their meal, while I think it adds extra punch to a lot of meals.

What do you guys think of red cabbage instead of tomato sauce? And garden cress as topping :P. That'd be damn tasty. – Korion Sep 2 2011 at 14:46

Mine was definitely pizza. You can make a pizza with a meat crust. It's called a meatza. I can't post the recipe since I'm I'm on my phone.

Honestly I keep it simple and dropped the thinking of replacing my old foods with a similar paleo substitute. I find it much less time consuming to just whip up a steak or some eggs. Then again, I don't have a problem eating the same things over and over.

Here is a recipe with using a cauliflower crust. diabetes-warrior.net/2010/03/08/… – vdh1979 Sep 2 2011 at 12:43

I realize of course that cheese is not paleo, so you can leave that off if you so desire. – vdh1979 Sep 2 2011 at 12:44
Thanks!! I do not eat dairy of any kind (never liked it, unless it's on a pizza for some reason), but I'm definitely gonna dream of that meatza tonight. I can't get that delicious-looking thing out of my mind. – Korion Sep 2 2011 at 15:13

Favourite foods pre archevore were Steak, Sushi and Dark Chocolate and hey! they all still work now! winning!

Long ago thought I loved pizza, but I was delusional and the bloated, feeling like crap disposition after eating pizza in the years before cleaning up my act well and truly put me off that. I persevered with lasagna (but not anymore) long after pizza, a good lasagna destroys any pizza hands down. Paleo lasagna -hmmmm.....

Tiramisu, yeah, If I could figure out a way to make that paleo-sher, then that would be awesome..... "Ferb, I know what I am going to do today!"

oooohhh I've been making the BEST paleo lasagna with butternut squash and sausage (but it could be any ground meat) -- fastpaleo.com/paleo-butternut-squash-lasagna it is A-mazing! – Ruth Sep 2 2011 at 12:09
I'm really glad I never had a "sweet tooth" (if that even exists). I was always attracted to fat. – Korion Sep 2 2011 at 12:11

Tiramisu should be easy.istead of cookies you could use some fruits. And for cream you use eaither heavycream. Or maybe mix the cream with avocado. instead of liquir, maybe some real coffee. or even use a sponge which is defintly paleo instead of cookies and you can soak it with coffee. just some hints. – oak0y Sep 2 2011 at 12:17
Ruth: that does look very good (just bookmarked it), but serves 5? more like serves one if I got near it! ;-) oak0y - hints on board! – FuelRestMotion Sep 2 2011 at 12:33
I do LOVE sushi. I still eat it but I eat it without rice. – vdh1979 Sep 2 2011 at 12:45

I've had a lot of success just making some really easy substitutions. I used to love cupcakes. But now I just substitute grass-fed beef liver for cupcakes. Viola. Some other substitutions:

Pastured eggs instead of donuts. Raw oysters instead of gummy bears. Cod liver oil instead of caramel. Bone broth instead of soda. Roe instead of cotton candy.

It's really that easy.

This makes me wanna try liver. I'll buy some grass-fed next time. But, what the heck is roe :D? – Korion Sep 2 2011 at 16:03
Roe is fish eggs. Yum! – Happy Now Sep 2 2011 at 20:08

Although it wasn't a pre-paleo favorite, I make a fried rice substitution now with cauliflower. Throw in some onions, carrots, eggs, chicken or beef, and you've got yourself a one-pot meal (my favorite kind!)

For all you folks mentioning pizza...

Thanks to the Primal Blueprint Quick & Easy recipe book, I've discovered a pizza frittata!

Turn the oven on to broil. Heat up a well oiled 10-12" cast iron skillet. Whip 5-6 eggs, pour into heated skillet. Give it a quick stir, let the eggs start to set. Add a tomato sauce if you do nightshades, and top with mozzarella or provolone cheese if you do dairy.

Put the skillet under the broiler for 3-5 minutes and you're done!

That's for the basic, of course. You can sauté some veggies or sausage in the skillet before adding the eggs. Add some rough chopped fresh basil. Dried oregano.

The world is your pizza.

Mine was PASTA--sad, I know!

These days, give me a 100% grass-fed, locally raised steak and I'm in heaven!

I'm the queen of substitutions!!!

Milkshakes: http://raspberrycoconut.com/2011/08/18/quick-n-fluffy-48-calorie-chocolate-shake/

Pizza: Omlette with tomato sauce, Parmesan cheese (I'm dairy-free but it doesn't bother me), salami, and fried onions and mushrooms.

Soda: Was never a soda drinker, but homemade kombucha quenches my thirst when I'm not in the mood for water.

Cake: http://raspberrycoconut.com/2011/06/27/chocolate-cake-for-breakfast/

Corn bread: http://raspberrycoconut.com/2011/08/27/summer-squash-cornbread/

Pasta: Zucchini noodles with sauce, grassfed beef, and Parmesan: http://raspberrycoconut.com/2011/06/12/low-carb-zucchini-noodles/

S'Mores: Banana Boats: http://raspberrycoconut.com/2011/07/06/campfire-banana-boats-and-4th-of-july-fun/

That covers just about all of my non-Paleo cravings!

I would guess mine was pizza, but personally I never did feel the to replace or create some paleo alternative of some SAD food, I do not find any comfort or reason for that. I have made meatza pizza a few times, as I have a good recipe and is a good way to chow down on good ground beef.

If you do dairy, you could try a pizza crust made with cheese, zucchini and eggs. Here's the recipe. You could do a meat sauce instead of a tomato sauce.

I haven't tried this recipe, so I can't vouch for it! But it looks pretty good.

My favorite pizza substitute is to just put all the toppings and sauce in a bowl and eat it. I've tried the meatza, but it was a lot of work and too meaty for my taste. If you miss that feel of picking it up and eating it though it's a pretty good substitute. There's recipe out there for a cauliflower crust but I haven't tried it yet so can't speak for how good it is.

My absolute favorite (requested birthday dinner every year at my parents house) was my mom's clam linguine with fresh linguine noodles and home-made garlic bread. My tummy just growled thinking of it...but this year think I'l substitute witha bit bowl of steamed clams and mussels with a side of pan seared oysters!

Luckily, my favorite food before and after was king crab. In general, I've found food cravings of all kinds to have diminished greatly. When you don't have these things in your house and you don't really go to restaurants much, there just isn't the exposure and temptation. I suppose not watching TV advertisements helps out as well.

I remember getting just livid about 2 months into paleo when there was a burger place commercial with a big ol' close up of a burger followed by a pizza commercial. I hadn't missed either of those things that much until I saw the commercials, and all of the sudden that was all I wanted. We have since gotten Tivo and/or stream what we want to watch and it is so much easier on me. – Happy Now Sep 2 2011 at 20:06
