So what are peoples thoughts on an adequate amount of fruit? If you are LC or VLC I guess no point answering.

I am fairly active (weights 3-4 times per week, sprints and cycling). I am fairly lean, no real issues with body weight, except maybe 1kg of fat around my gut.

I know that I eat very well, but I wonder if I eat too much fruit.

Daily I would normally consume 1 banana, 1-2 apples, 1 cup of berries, couple of pieces of melon and sometimes a blood orange.

Is this a lot? Do people eat more/less. Can people please let me know roughly what they eat fruit wise?

Cheers Hackers

I say, eat local, eat what's in season. I buy rasps, strawberries, blueberries now, and random local melons, but that's still sparingly, and I will typically eat whatever I buy within 1-2 snackings. Haven't had a banana or apple in quite some time, the sugar is almost too much for me now. – ryan Sep 2 2011 at 14:14

I think I'm an odd one in this community as I eat several pieces of fruit per day (my blood sugar is fine despite being overweight and 64) and I'm losing fat steadily (30+ lbs so far.) Unlike most, I have trouble with starchy foods triggering cravings so I have to stick with low-starch veggies. That seems to be the opposite of most posters--takes all kinds, I guess. – Nance Sep 29 2011 at 14:35
I can't resist frozen fruit with full fat yogurt. I eat it at least once a day, sometimes twice. Like others have said, this works for me. I'm still losing weight at the rate I'm comfortable with and I don't get frustrated from restricting too many of the things that I love! Listen to your body! – latergator Jun 4 2012 at 16:32
it would depend what other carbs you are eating during the day and how much of them... And too much is a relative term - depends on what you are happy with and what results you are seeing... – EricAmz Jun 5 2012 at 3:53

Seems like a reasonable amount to me.

When it comes down to it your the only person who can decide if that's a lot. If you have no issues related to fruit I would eat as much as you want, the last thing any of us need is more dietary restriction imo.

I eat zero fruit (or juice) and haven't eaten any in over 4 years. This includes tomatoes since I also gave up nightshades when I went Paleo (2007).

Then again I'm a 47 y/o female and still trying to lose weight.

I say that if you are looking and feeling like you want to, then don't worry about it. :)

For those of you that eat a lof of fruit, do you try to combine it with something fatty? Like apples/bananas with almond butter, berries with heavy cream, etc?

Only the banana before CF on hot days for extra "sticking" power. I burn through calories at an extremely fast pace so that extra helps immensely. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Sep 2 2011 at 12:25
What is CF? I also heard from someone he belnded fruits with wild greens. And also i heard blending fruit with nuts. He uses premium nuts(rawfood quality) like www.orkos.com – oak0y Sep 2 2011 at 12:32
Fruit with something fatty is extremly tasty but I don't really think it has any significant benefits. Pre-workout fruit(especially juice) alone would probably be best because it digest so fast. – cliff Sep 2 2011 at 13:08

CF = CrossFit :) I've always trained fasted, excluding afternoon practice, so having to eat something before going into the box was really weird and took some getting used to. I definitely noticed an increase in speed and improvement with my lifts when I started the banana/almond butter. It's the fat - when I do banana alone it doesn't "stick" as long and I'll start to fade before my session is up. Almond butter, a sprinkle of sea salt and I'm aces :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Sep 2 2011 at 13:56

As mentioned above, I eat tons of fruit. Sometimes I eat it as "dessert" at the end of a meat/fat meal and in those instances I'd give you a yes answer. However, if the meat meal fills me up I wait until afternoon to eat the fruit. Doesn't seem to make any difference for me--I think you either get along with fruit or you don't. – Nance Sep 29 2011 at 14:37

Seems like a lot to me, but I'm not much of a fruit eater. Sometimes I'll just have a couple pieces of fruit a week, sometimes I'll go through a lb of berries in a couple days; when I can get local white peaches though, I will throw down!

If you feel good and are happy with how you look, keep doing what you're doing. If you are concerned about the belly fat, I'd try cutting some of the fruit.

I eat zero fruit except pulp free OJ -Trying to fix some digestive troubles with an unusual approach. Its working.

That's interesting. What problem are you trying to solve with OJ? – sam Sep 3 2011 at 3:03
The Oj isn't specific, but its a 'safer' fruit for digestive issues like mine, apparently. – Senneth Sep 4 2011 at 17:35

I do CF 3-4 times a week, heavy lifting tossed into the mix, with cycling - I'm lean and mean :) I like fruit. I like fruit a.lot. That was the hardest for me, to cut back. Literally a lifetime ritual of whatever is seasonal right before bed and kind of munching on fruity tastiness throughout the day.

Outside of a banana about 30mins before my WOD's, I will have a cup of berries, strawberries/raspberries/blueberries/blackberries, with my first meal and then the same before bed. Occasionally when I could get Rainier cherries I would add those into the mix, a few Corinth grapes, or if something came into very limited season and I had to try. I have two new apples on my counter from the farmer's market that I'll probably slice up and eat over a couple of days.

Personally I think you're eating a nice amount.. but that's me. Everyone is different so whatever feels best for you :)

Wow. Fruit. It's a wonderful thing. Filled with many antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins, and yet it is still delicious! I say what your having is a nice amount. And hey, there wouldn't be a problem if you ate even more! Antioxidants in fruit are miracle-workers... they help cure cancer, arthritis, asthma, heart disease, inflammation, blood diseases, aging, and more! In fact, eating fruit can make you lose weight. I am writing a report on fruits and their antioxidants. Don't stop eating fruit!

peter, I eat about half the amount than you, but it depends of the season. I don't think your amount is a lot.

My newest perception is, as suggested by some paleo nutritionists and studies, that the health benefits of fruit and vegetables are overemphasized, and they don't contribute that much to your overall health. My current strategy is to not spent too much time worrying about them...a few pieces are ok, but it is much more important to have a good source of meat.

I don't do well at all if I try to cut back on fruit but I agree with your final sentence; I usually start the day with a meat/fat meal and it's unusual for me to eat fruit first. – Nance Sep 29 2011 at 14:40

1 - 2 peaces two times a week, mostly banana, kiwi.

I don't like fruit, and never did. Its like soda to me.... that amount of sugar always made me feel bad. I would rather eat ice cream. I never crave fruit, ever but I do crave sweets.

I eat ALOT of fruit. hmm fruit I love it so much. During the summer time I can usually eat a whole watermelon in a day. Peach, mango smoothie. Watermelon. yum. Fruit is great.

50%+ of all I eat. But I'm really more of a Peatarian. I can only do this when I practically eliminated PUFAs.

In a day I could eat 2 to 4 apples, 4 to 9 bananas, 24 ounces of OJ, some peaches.

Add to that milk, one or two eggs, some meat, cheese, dark chocolate, and that's about all I eat.

Fruit content depends upon LR or LS. If you are LS you can eat like Denise Minger. If youre LR you need to limit it big time

I also think fruit is tied to season and to light......so spring and summer are times to up it......with activity. In the fall and winter I go into a fruit hibernation. But I am more active in winter. LOL – The Quilt Sep 29 2011 at 13:57

I eat frozen berries with coconut milk about 3 times a month. I eat a ton of tomatoes including cooked in a homemade sauce. i also like sweet plantains cooked in coconut oil once every couple of weeks. I consider fruit a treat for me but I'm still leaning out.

I think you should eat fruit if you want to if it does not bother your gut and you are already lean.

I really only eat blueberries and raspberries, a few times per week (I like to buy them frozen and pour heavy cream over them). Most fruit doesn't agree with me very well, I think I have fructose intolerance. If I didn't I would eat more, I like fruit and don't eat very low carb.

i am learning i am a weird one here lol. i eat fruit regularly and often and am not lean. fruit is a happy food for me and i can give up almost anything if i have fruit. i lost 60lbs a few years ago eating probably 4-5 pieces a day and got off gluten, dairy, drugs, alcohol, and coffee because of it! so pry it from my cold, dead hands :)

i think a good question is to ask yourself what you LOVE to eat. if it is a nourishing food, keep it and focus on giving up other things that you dont care as much about (if you want to).

I like your "Easy does it" approach. So not deprivation! – Doris Jun 5 2012 at 15:59
i have a history of food issues and binges, so for me, seeing the big picture really helps! when i step back and realize i've given up so much and done so much well, it helps me realize that fruit is just... fruit. not drugs. so i should chill :) – Rebekah Jun 5 2012 at 21:21

I already ate fruit, usually with breakfast and some between meal snacks so 2-3 times a day, but lately on a lark I started eating a LOT more fruit like right after lunch & dinner for dessert too, not limiting quantities either, and have started losing weight again!

I don't eat fruit regularly but every couple weeks I binge on it and eat berries, melon, pineapple, watermelon- whatever is available! I like it, but my body only craves it every few weeks so that's when I eat it! Listen to your body if u feel good eating that fruit, keep doing it :)!

I eat it whenever I want, which usually comes in cycles. For weeks I'll have no desire at all, and then for a few days I'll want it like crazy and go through intense amounts every day. I'm just at the tail end of a fruit cycle right now - yesterday I had an entire pineapple and the day before I had 2 oranges and a whole box of strawberries.

I'm also lean and active; I don't notice any effect on my weight or energy.

I love fruit. Tried low carb, NOT for me, I do better and lose more weight eating moderate carbs.

A typical day for me is 1-2 cups of berries for breakfast, almond milk, 8oz or so protein, 2-4 cups veggies, plus some kind of fat source. I enjoy a banana or apple for a snack sometimes but lately have been eating just two large meals a day. If I don't have a snack, dinner looks pretty similar to breakfast although I usually try to eat more of my carbs for breakfast (dinner is more protein heavy). I try to eat more berries for their lower sugar/calorie benefit, as well as the fact that I LOVE them! :-)

As some others have noted, my fruit cravings will vary a bit. Last week I found myself making smoothies as a mid-day snack (1-2 bananas, 1-2 cups frozen berries, almond milk), as well as eating more like 3cups+ fruit for breakfast. I am a waitress so on my feet a lot plus I do moderate cardio 5-6x a week, 2x a week weights. My carb counts are anywhere from 70-170g a day and I've been getting lean eating my fruit/carbs. Everybody is different. Enjoy!
