I've been on the CrossFit/Paleo path for about seven months and like so many of my fellow PaleoHackers -- I love it. Love how it has changed my life, my outlook, how I feel, how I look -- no looking back.
Here's my question: I've noticed that, in the past 6 months, I've been getting recurrent bouts of ear infections -- generally of the otitis externa variety. Wondering if anyone else out there in Paleo-land has experienced this and, if so, have you been able to resolve it?
I get eczema in my ears (gross, I know) when I overdo dairy (sensitivity to casein), and I end up with bad ear infections. I'd maybe try eliminating the almonds or whatever you think might be bothering you and see if it helps.
(For the record, I can do cream and butter here and there, but little more than that without bothering my ears. I don't seem to have many other symptoms.)
Following up -- Since posting this 5 months ago, I've tweaked a few things:
Can report that both the recurring itchy-ear thing and what had become continual dry/flaky eczema on the outside edges of my palms have completely subsided.
Additionally, I also kicked my almond butter habit, in an effort to tighten up carb intake, cut down on fat intake, and maintain a better Omega 3:6 ratio. Last week, one of my CF sisters made some almond butter for the first time, and was kind enough to share a small jar with me. Within 2 days, my ears were itching again! So, I'm kinda thinking almonds are a trigger for me, sadly.
Upside is that it will provide ongoing motivation for for me to stay off the almond butter train...
I've been on Paleo for about 6 months now and got my first ear infection in the longest time just about a week ago. I'm taking antibiotics to cure it, and I finally am a little closer to where I can hear myself talk! It's been tough, but for me- it's the frequent traveling that I do and the change of temperatures that I go through from the various locations.
I don't think it has anything to do with you going on Paleo. Keep up what you're doing and just take a decongestion like Zyrtec D or a Clariton D and a nasal spray helps. I still have 8 days left of my antibiotic so I can't wait for the day I can hear again and not be so deaf! These ear infections do suck though!
