I'm on a quest to mimic and Paleo-ify the foods that we all miss the most, and develop recipes that are easily made in a crockpot.

So shoot: what do you want to see me try to make?

Thanks!

Sarah

I like your food blog, by the way...easy, nutritious and delicious, can't wait to try some of your recipes! – Rogue Nutritionist Sep 5 2011 at 19:45

RC Cola. Preferred would be in the biggest glass possible, full of crushed ice, with a straw. Would take it in a can. In a bottle. In whatever vehicle available as long as the beverage is icyicyicy. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Sep 5 2011 at 22:13

P.S. Sarah, you may want to just have your blog link in your profile. Otherwise you may get deleted for self-promotion. – sherpamelissa Sep 6 2011 at 0:08

Didn't know that was a possibility, since I was asking a legitimate question. But happy to comply with the rules; thanks for the heads up! I wouldn't want to lose all of this great input. – Sarah Sep 6 2011 at 1:22

Cheetoes. The puffed variety. If you can't pull that off how about chicken fried steak?

Wow! Cheetoes! Didn't expect to see that one. :-) I will mull that one over, but I think I can manage something that will closely resemble a chicken fried steak. – Sarah Sep 5 2011 at 17:23
lol...thanks Sarah. – BaconHealsChic Sep 5 2011 at 17:28

Japanese tempura fried vegetables!!!!!

I can't even do a planned cheat with them as it is pretty clear that I am celiac, though I am not willing to do any grains for testing due to previous experience with return of some autoimmune stuff ---> Healthy FEAR.

There is so very little that I miss, but if I could have tempura again, just sometimes, Id be an ecstatic girl!

I miss udon noodles, started off with some tempura pumpkin and Japanese sweet potato with the grated ginger dip... ahh! Maybe there is some sort of rice flour you could try Mem, unless that is totally out for you too. – Jackie Oct 29 2011 at 20:24

Actually, chicken fried steak would be pretty easy with almond flour. Alternatively using crushed sunflower seeds maybe?

I will probably try arrowroot first because it is flavorless, but if that doesn't work, I will break into the nut flours. – Sarah Sep 5 2011 at 17:52
I can't believe with only two answers so far that they're both for chicken fried steak. Wtf – ben61820 Sep 5 2011 at 17:58
Don't forget the gravy!!! lol – BaconHealsChic Sep 5 2011 at 18:00
I won't. The mash will be easy - just use cauliflower or sweet potatoes... I'm still thinking of how to make the gravy. I will post here when I have a decent product to share! Thanks for the challenge! – Sarah Sep 5 2011 at 21:32
There's got to be a strong southern contingent here. IF my hubby were paleo and asked this question, I'm sure he'd be writing chicken fried steak, lol! – Atkins-witha-loincloth Sep 6 2011 at 0:45

Really about the only thing I really miss is salted peanuts. I have always had a thing for them, and only have peanuts in moderation now. But every now and then I break down and have a few handfuls.

Oh, I was such a total peanut freak! – Atkins-witha-loincloth Sep 6 2011 at 0:43

Bread slices or buns to put sandwich ingredients in. Portabellas are good, but to messy to pack in a lunch.

You can actually bake in the crockpot, so I will attempt something in the near future for you! – Sarah Sep 5 2011 at 21:49
Alicia -- I found a modified Atkins recipe that is AWESOME as bread rolls. They can even hold messy burgers -- they're a staple around here. You can find it here: blog.yourlighterside.com/2009/05/… – January Oct 29 2011 at 21:05

Good chocolate chip cookies without tons of 06.

I was gonna say that, but I figured I could probably make something close with almond flour. I've just never tried. I love a fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookie, just a little underdone. – sherpamelissa Sep 6 2011 at 0:14
I have been working on perfecting on a lower sugar French macaron (egg white merengue and almond flour) cookie and finding a low sugar chocolate ganache type thing to put in the middle. I made some for my little bro, and he put nutella inside and said it tasted like chocolate chip cookies, though I did not taste myself :( – Jackie Oct 29 2011 at 20:28

Mac and Cheese!

NOT the nastyazzfakeorangepowderedstuff, the but the real thing.

But even if there were a stellar substitute for the pasta, I'm not sure about the amount of dairy. We've reintroduced dairy well in small portions (heavy cream, pastured cultured butter, raw aged cheddar), but I'm thinking that's a whole lot of dairy in one dish. Some way to thin it out a bit, but still retain creamy cheesy goodness? Coconut milk mac and cheese? :-D

ooo, I am intrigued!! – Sarah Sep 6 2011 at 3:06
coconut mac & cheese actually sounds amazing. the combination of cheese + coconut may be unconventional but on cauliflower...hmm...i may have to try it! – jim_bob Oct 30 2011 at 1:04

Ben and Jerrys Half Baked ice cream....or any ice cream general. Heck milk and sugar sounds good right about now but it's only because I know I can't have it :D

Really good pizza, pasta dishes with cream sauces, ice tea with sugar, good crusty breads, and traditional desserts.

Not only do I miss the foods, I also miss baking. I had a few "killer" cake and cookie recipes that I designed and had the process down to a science. I loved creating them and making people happy with them.

Hi Carl! I have attempted a Pizza Soup already and it's got a lot of that great pizza flavor: mypaleocrockpot.blogspot.com/2011/08/… As for the others, I will see what I can do! – Sarah Sep 5 2011 at 23:54

I have to say pizza is in my top 3 missed foods. I used to make it once a week for my husband and I. Also missed are sushi and salt and vinegar lays potato chips. – Jo T Sep 6 2011 at 3:54
I don't like mock crusts because they just don't do it for me, so for pizza taste I roast some veggies, cook up some sausage or meatballs, put in a casserole dish with a homemade marinara sauce and then cover with fresh mozzarella and bake it - this is more from when I was low carb, but I might try it again once I am more into paleo to see if the dairy affects me. – Jackie Oct 29 2011 at 20:27

Pretzel bread. It's such a delicious vehicle for so many toppings. It's the sweet/salty thing that I love.

Used to love Bagels, toasted, soaked in butter and lathered in crunchy peanut butter. It would destroy me now, but boy was that a comfort food. Ah the past, its like a heroin junkie reminiscing about his best trips....

Peanut butter, jelly and banana sandwiches on white bread. Definitely don't miss the way they made me feel but they were sooooo tasty.

Fresh baked bread, hot out of the oven, slathered with butter. Drool....

Potatoes and tomatoes. I'm currently not eating them because I'm VLC. I'm probably gonna re-introduce them next year.

My own homemade milk and honey yeast dinner rolls.

Fresh Butter Sugar cookies.

Baked Mac & Cheese. The kind you can cut into cubes, it's so dense.

Beef & Stout pie from Pacific Pie Co - it's grass fed beef!

Ice Cream (especially B&J), Pizza, Good burgers (not McD).

I've been thinking about testing myself for gluten reaction. Why not make it with "style".

(think all three)

Take a handful of frozen blueberries, raspberries, or whatever berries you like, put them in a bowl, and pour coconut milk over them. Stir it up and eat it like ice cream. The frozen berries turn the coconut milk into slush--it's awesome! – Akman Oct 29 2011 at 21:33
Thanks man, I've done this, and it IS good. But it is no Chocolate Fudge Brownie :) – Antti Oct 30 2011 at 6:26

I just saw the season's first egg nog show up on the shelves. Before I noticed that, I would have said thick creamy chocolate malted milk shake.

Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, with all the peanut butter oozing out of the bread, and a tall glass of milk. I also really miss cheesecake. I don't crave these foods, just miss them.
