How do you reconcile your non-paleo job with your Paleo approach? For instance, do you work for Kashi and General Mills while dissing grains on Paleohacks? Do you work for the sugar industry but consider it a poison in your own mind? I'm just wondering if a lot of people on this board find a lot of dissonance between their personal eating beliefs and how that affects their work. Has your new lifestyle forced you to make a change in your career for example?

I work in healthcare, in a position that gives me absolutely no leeway for making non-CW suggestions. Patients with known or suspected gluten sensitivity related disorders? Sorry, diet is dictated by corporate.

I got into this field through volunteering in labor and delivery, but will probably not pursue a related career, as much as I might like to, due to lack of options I feel that I can stand behind locally.

I hope to eventually find something that utilizes my education but doesn't involve large amounts of cognitive dissonance.

(I also hesitate to post stuff about non-CW choices in places where people might give undue weight to my words due to my formal education, when many of my personal lifestyle choices aren't really in compliance with what I was taught.)

I am an organic chemist and not a day goes by without me wishing that i am not one. Everyday is spent breathing, touching, and living in toxic chemicals. On top of that the stress to produce results is phenomenal.

however, as geeky as it sounds, i LOVE chemistry. I love learning about it and there is always something to be learned from every, pardon my french, fuck up or great experiment that i run. That is my reconciliation.

Oh no - can't you move into a more theoretical (vs. experimental) position, or at least to a lab where you're not dealing w/ quite so many toxic chemicals? – Marina Sep 5 2011 at 22:55
organic chemistry is a hands on field :-/ – Sunshine Sep 6 2011 at 14:37

I work in a bakery for a natural foods grocery. Its pretty weird, vegans and whole grains everywherrrrrre! The horror! ;) all in all, I do wish I could sample more to aid in customer service. Its not really tempting to me, just harder to relate to m y customers.

I work in healthcare and teach physiology classes an right now we are actually talking about dietary analysis and energy expenditure. And along comes myplate and calorie in calorie out for athletes and nutritional replacements for recovery. Pro carbs in the classroom- anti anything but meats fruit and veggies outside. I'm pretty sure my lectures are dry and boring when they care about a " controversial subject. Also, athletes ask me what shoe is the best for running- I also have o fit for orthotics!!! I do manage to get in a few digs at foot conformity and all but it makes me cringe to hear that they are having achilles tightness while wearing super cushiony shoes and running 90 miles a week!

I work in R&D in the neolithic disease management industry. If paleo worked for everyone, I'd be out of a job. I do feel a bit like Dr.K, frustrated that I am only mopping up the back end of things. And frankly, that is still where the money is. It is still honest, if not suboptimal, work. For example, making artificial limbs for people who lost their originals due to diabetes is better than having them crawl around on stubs.

I reluctantly went for an interview (the job sounded great) for the company that owns KFC & Taco Bell, almost hoping not to get an offer and have to make that decision. In the end I was offered the job, and along with a few other factors, the anti-Paleo ethos was a huge factor in why I turned the role down. I can cope with non-paleo jobs, but KFC & Taco Bell would be a step too far for me!

I work in behavioral health. I wish I could recommend diet and lifestyle changes in addition to behavioral interventions--but no one would listen to me.
