So I just found out I was pregnant (Yay!) but I sell want to continue eating paleo, and after not eating dairy for so long I am now really turned off by it so I don't really want to add it back in but will if I have to. So I know I can get calcium from broccoli, kale, etc but not sure if it will be enough for my growing baby. So I'm thinking of taking calcium in the form of chews or something. Thoughts? I know some supplements aren't very paleo like, so just looking into my options. Does anyone recommend any kind of calcium chew brands?

Congratulations on the pregnancy! I'm currently going through IVF and was wondering the same thing, so thanks for asking. :-) – PaleoDel Sep 7 2011 at 0:56

Congratulations!

I am the last person to ask when it comes to the topic of pregnancy nutrition, but I can offer you this: sardines, salmon, and other cooked fish with small soft bones are a great way to get bioavailable calcium. Bone broths may be a good source of calcium as well, but there doesn't seem to be any conclusive data on how much calcium they contain.

I second the tiny canned fish with bones. If the texture doesn't sit well with you, you can make a yummy spread with a can of bone-in salmon, a stick of butter, some lemon juice and dill and/or capers in the food processor. I think calcium might also be a bit oversold and magnesium undersold when it comes to pregnancy. – Happy Now Sep 6 2011 at 6:39

Spinach, Apricots, and Figs are also excellent Paleo sources of calcium :)

Spinach, garden cress and sardines are good sources. I don't know what other think about calcium in water? I found water in the supermarket with 400mg of calcium for every liter. It's french water, so I don't know if you can find it.

Here is a list of food items, from herbs to fruit, that are highest in calcium. Scroll down and you'll see a complete chart. Just omit what you're not eating now and it's probably good. A few extra I would add in would be papaya and almonds :)

Nice to see sesame seeds listed. They can be sprinkled over salads etc. – Efaitch Sep 6 2011 at 14:59
At Asian markets there are also these neat little mills that you add sesame seeds to and can grind the seeds over whatever you would like. Make a vanilla ice cream and grind a bunch on top for a treat, too, yum! :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Sep 6 2011 at 23:38

Thorne CalMag Citrate worked wonders for me. 1 scoop gets you 500mg. magnesium and 1000mg. calcium. I took it at bed time during pregnancy to stave off the dreaded night time pregnancy charlie horses (and it was probably good for the baby too).
