After 6 weeks of paleo, apart from all the usual benefits my sense of taste and smell have improved incredibly. Simple foods like blueberries for instance are a taste sensation. Has anyone else experienced this?

just wait, there's more amazing things to come - you're only getting started :) – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Sep 6 2011 at 15:20
Yes...paleo "buzz" effect with none of the downside. Everything tastes better. – BaconHealsChic Sep 6 2011 at 15:39
Maybe I am doing it wrong or haven't been doing it long enough. I have not experienced an improvement in taste. I have noticed temperature extreme tolerance. – bachcole Jun 9 at 22:25

I think the most intense change for me has been bananas, before they were a tasteless moosh...now theyr more sugary tasting to me than say tootsie rolls used to taste

Definitely, when I went Paleo the first time about 3 months ago I remember tasting the natural sweetness in fruits like apples, strawberries- everything! To me eating an apple was like having ice cream lol.

I love this diet. Not diet - lifestyle. – Alwyn Sep 6 2011 at 20:09

YES! taste buds very efficient these days, helping me to enjoy each bite of whatever we find in the garden and that which we cook.

even bland foods are full of flavor. – Alwyn Sep 6 2011 at 20:08
Have you tasted pizza base since being paleo? It's the toppings that make the pizza, not the dough it seems... Or, the butter on the bread and not the bread itself. Those bland wheat based foods, definitely taste blander ime! – Efaitch Sep 6 2011 at 20:40

Smell & taste are almost super human now lol - 90% dark chocolate is sweet to me, fresh strawberries are almost mind blowing. The smell of bacon cooking is so complex now.

Man, I still have a ways to go, then. I recently discovered that 90% is still a bridge too far for me. 85% is just right. – karlub Sep 6 2011 at 21:51

You've possibly addressed a long-standing marginal zinc status, which is an important nutrient for preventing dysgeusia.

That'd probably take more than 6 weeks, so it may just be that removing the highly intense hyperpalatable foods for a while has recalibrated your tastes to the default settings.

Thanks for that, something to think about. – Alwyn Sep 6 2011 at 20:05

Smell & taste definitely affected here! I can't wear perfume any longer. It's just too smelly!

Yes! I'm 3 months in and eating things I wouldn't have touched with a ten foot pole months ago. I can't get enough sauerkraut, I literally eat it at every meal. I have a love for muscles, clams and game. I'm also more willing to try new things and I usually like them. Another big taste explosion for me is salt-- love it!!
