At the doctor's today. Had to see him in order to get some labs. I wanted TSH and Vit D. When I said "Vitamin D" he does a face plant, shakes his head and asks why in the world I want to check my vitamin D. I told him my wife's vit D level was 7 and we eat the same stuff. He goes into this long spiel about how vit D is way overrated and people are doing themselves great harm by megadosing to get their levels in the 50's. Then said he himself had a vit D level of 8 and it's been that way for years. WTH?

Your doctor is just wrong; well, stubborn, arrogant, and wrong to be more precise. – Jay Sep 7 2011 at 1:09

And when they say such incredibly stupid stuff about one thing how can you trust them on any other subject related to your health? – Shari Bambino Sep 7 2011 at 1:12

Akman: Arva Chiu is a excellent Internal Med MD in your area. I think she is only doing gastro now though. If you called her office for a referral, you could be assured of an excellent one. In Anchortown: Timothy Coalwell MD and Maria Freeman MD - both excellent. – Atkins-witha-loincloth Sep 7 2011 at 1:20

That is not even CW any longer.....tell him to read this and then tell him I said read a freaking book some time before he hurts someone. He is total embarrassment to our profession.

I printed it up and will hand it to him tomorrow. I work in the hospital so see him in passing often. I'm the same guy who quit taking Synthroid a month ago, can't wait to see my TSH--I didn't tell him anything about that, either. – akman Sep 7 2011 at 3:41

Well, clearly he's big on conventional wisdom. Instead of challenging you, he should have, at the very least, treated you like a CLIENT. And he should be of the philosophy that if Vitamin D levels are important to you, it better DAMN WELL be important to him. I swear, practitioners who lack the ability to listen to their patients is almost the norm these days. His ego tells him that he's got to be right, and that you have no idea what you're talking about.

Go elsewhere, and seek out a new practitioner. Find another DOC, or NP, preferably a functional med doc. Check out the paleo physician's network.

Sorry for your experience, as a Nurse and aspiring NP, I cringe when I hear crap like that.

So true. A doctor's job is to care about you. You're their boss. If you want your damn Vitamin D tested, he should test it. If not, go to some who will. Go to someone who will respect you. – Honey_badger Sep 7 2011 at 1:30

You're paying him to test it anyway! – maryeeclarkisouthunting Sep 7 2011 at 1:37
Sadly, this is a concept lost on many of our practitioners. The best ones are those that haven't forgotten who pays the bills. I'm lucky to have found a cardiologist on wolf's network, and he's open to do anything cardiac related. In terms of labs, everything's related, so I get some great healthcare. – The Japsican Sep 7 2011 at 1:38

Just make sure you supplement K2 and Mg along with it. You don't want xtra calcium to finish on wrong places.
