Love the NOW 5,000. Took it all winter because there is little sun here in the Northeast in the winter months. I switched to the 1,000 this summer so I can adjust, depending on how much sun I am getting from day to day.

My doctor said my vitamin D levels were the highest they had seen this past December, around the high 70s if I recall, after switching to the 5,000 for a few weeks. She told me to keep on doing whatever I was doing.

I used it 1 x per day and got to 85 ng/ml during the wintertime, so it is what they say it is.

I think I'm going to do 3-4K this winter and break it up so that I'm not ingesting more than 1K with any one meal. I have no evidence for it, but I suspect that it's better to space it out.

That's interesting Travis. I don't get that it would make any difference, given that it is fat-soluble. Many docs prescribe a larger dose once a week. I take 6,000 IUs once a day, but if forget, I just double the dose the next day. I take mine early in the day. – Dragonfly Sep 7 2011 at 22:33
I take the NOW 2,000 IU for more flexibility. – Dragonfly Sep 7 2011 at 22:34
I figure the transporters get saturated with relatively small amounts and that the excess may be harmful in some as yet unknown way. I wouldn't be surprised if 3000 3x a day resulted in the same serum level as 5000 all at once. – Travis Culp Sep 7 2011 at 22:37
Well, given that sun exposure can get you 10,000 to 20,000 IUs in an hour, depending on your latitude, complexion & cholesterol level, I personally am not concerned. – Dragonfly Sep 7 2011 at 23:35

Random observation and a heads up, the NOW Foods Vitamin D3 2000 IU softgels contain rice bran oil, while the 1K and the 5K versions use olive oil. – kinetic Sep 8 2011 at 2:31

Also take the NOW 5000mg purchased from Amazon, and am 30 weeks pregnant. My OB said my Vitamin D levels were among the best she has seen in quite awhile, and to continue my regimine. (Live in the Seattle area to boot)
