I won't be the only one to say this but running 15 miles/week is probably doing at least as much harm as it is helping you.

Try doing shorter intervals at a higher intensity.

As for how much weight to lose, it depends on how much you weigh now.

I don't think that 15 miles a week is specifically that bad. If you ran 5 times a week for 3 miles. 3 miles is only what 20 minutes. I disagree that that would do any damage at all. On the other hand, if you were doing 15 miles in one go, different story. Some people in the paleo sphere have an idea that any running is bad, I don't buy it. – peter Sep 8 2011 at 7:39
Fair enough, but I would bet someone trying to lose weight isn't running a 7 min mile. – Jeff Sep 8 2011 at 15:01
Yeah you are probably right Jeff. I get confused with the imperial system. 8-9 minutes? That would still only be 24-27 minutes. I totally agree with the whole chronic cardio thing. Melissa, you would be better off walking for 30 minutes every day, and doing 2 sets of tabata sprints a week. Total time would be about the same, benefits would be much greater for both fitness and weight loss. marksdailyapple.com/what-are-tabata-sprints – peter Sep 9 2011 at 11:16
Yeah I agree with that suggestion Peter, most people don't walk nearly enough, and don't sprint at all, both of which are better (in my opinion) than jogging. – Jeff Sep 9 2011 at 15:00

A safe and healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. That is a very general statement. Many other factors come into play such as current weight, diet, exercise, body composition, intensity of training etc. How bad are your bad eating habits? What kind of help are you looking for? If you could be more specific in your question, I'm sure you'd get some great answers.

Running is a great way to lose weight, but it's also a very easy way to hurt yourself if done improperly. That possibility increases greatly with extra pounds. Combine that with a weak core and poor form and well...you could end up seriously injured. Try strength training to build muscle and circuit or interval training to burn fat.
