There's no doubt that I get a sense of clarity and warm, good feeling after eating coconut oil, but recently I've been cooking every meal with it and think I'm over dosing. I'm feeling too clear minded and spacey, like I'm floating. Anyone else relate this to eating too much coconut oil?

I doubt that. I eat something like 150g of coconut oil every single day and I don't feel anything. It just helps my skin. – Korion Sep 8 2011 at 17:41
Korion, I use too eat that much but I realized it wasn't as micro nutrient rich as other foods and I was essentially eating it just for calories. – ROB Sep 8 2011 at 19:08

Brilliant - between this and the thread about solidifying coconut oil announcing the changing of the seasons, I'm sensing that a certain poetic langour has come over Paleo Hacks. Maybe Patrick will change the rules so that all Hacks must be written in haiku form... – Simibee Sep 8 2011 at 15:31
I thoroughly approve of Albert and Simibee's responses. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Sep 8 2011 at 17:04

No, the only side-effects I get from too much coconut is terrible nausea, vomiting and digestive upset.

A bit queasy in the stomach, that's what I feel when I get too much coconut oil. Luckily no vomiting thus far. – Pieter D Sep 8 2011 at 14:13
I have the same symptoms as David if I eat too much Coconut Oil. Too much for me, right now, is about anything over a couple of tablespoons in one day. – Senneth Sep 8 2011 at 15:56
Me too, if I eat anything more than about a tablespoon. – Olivia Sep 8 2011 at 16:58

Coconut oil is a powerful appetite suppressant, and a clear-minded yet spacy-floaty feeling is a commonly reported state during fasting or severe calorie restriction. (I have personally experienced both effects first hand.)

Are you making sure that you're eating enough?

I think that this is the most likely explanation. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Sep 8 2011 at 19:55

i believe the clear-minded feeling comes from ketone bodies increased circulation, yes? I've experiencing the same thing during fasting with coconut oil. – prowler Sep 11 2011 at 11:49

gross. . . – No more. Sep 8 2011 at 17:14
I'm still doing it. Nothing gross about it, just handy when you have a mold allergy. I notice that when I eat too much of it at dinner I wake up during the night and feel bad. Now I only eat a lot of the oil in the morning. – Korion Sep 8 2011 at 17:42

I react strangely to coconut oil and I'm trying to figure out why but for the time being am off of the stuff. It give me brain fog and causes a case of folliculitis I can't shake to flare up hella. The coconut oil I'm using is cold-refined so it shouldn't be a reaction to allergens in the oil. It could be something MCT/liver related but I'm going to go without for a few months then 'll add it back in... Of course the one substance nobody talks ill of, I react poorly to.

salicylate????? – ROB Sep 8 2011 at 19:09
@ROB you are a beautiful, beautiful man! – No more. Sep 8 2011 at 19:17
Paul Jaminet says the ketones it generates can feed fungi, is that what causes folliculitis? – thaneverbefore Sep 8 2011 at 23:08
salicylate doesn't seem to fit the bill as symptoms resolved when replaced with olive oil which is also high in salicylate. – No more. Sep 9 2011 at 0:17
It's traditionally excess keratin or bacteria that cause folliculitis. I've been to a couple of doctors and naturopaths. It stumps everyone. – No more. Sep 9 2011 at 0:18
