The title is oxmoronic, I know, but at least that's better than just being moronic ;)

So -- does anyone use any modern technological devices to help you with your paleo? And I don't mean web sites (we all know fitday, nutritiondata, etc) but I mean actual devices.

I thought of this in reference to the weight-loss thread, because, key to my healthy eating is the following device, that I'm a HUGE fan of:

the Withings. I just weigh myself daily and it keeps automatically a record of my weight - I can download the data, see the curves/charts, etc etc. This is why I can tell you with precision how much I've lost since I started.

I've heard about different tools to measure your blood sugar levels and cholesterol at home. I've never tried any (has anyone?).

Any other tools anyone would recommend?

For example: a particular device to help cook meat so we easily keep it as close to raw as possible? A particular system to measure food quantities?

We are living in the future, this stuff should be here by now ;)

Refrigerators, freezers, gas range, gas bbq, food dehydrator, meat grinder, food processor, mixer, any number of kitchen gadgets all make Paleo food preparation easier. Nothing in particular stands out to me. I've had success with my dehydrator and meat grinder in making pemmican..

A cheapo blood glucose meter can be a handy tool for "neolithic foods avoidance" in social settings! Just flash the glucose meter and say "I can't/won't eat that" and you stop getting pestered!

Rifles are far more efficient than bows or atlatls, even if archery and atlatlery are loads of fun, and shotguns definitely beat throwing sticks for bagging birds. Brass wire beats grass cordage for snares any day, and don't get me started on the superiority of metal points, axes and blades versus flint...

And metal fishhooks! Wow! And monofilament fishing line is wonderful stuff. And with the internet, you can research edible plants and mushrooms really quickly, without having to consult a tribal elder or worse, test it on yourself. Heck, you can even find fishing spots or plan hunts using the internet.

Edit: I should clarify that I definitely fall into the re-enactment camp ;).

Great stuff! A good chuckle, but real advancements. – Tim Rangitsch Jun 21 2010 at 0:19
@Tim: I was entirely serious. Well, mostly serious. I've been messing around with every single bit of technology I mentioned there for years. – Fearsclave Jun 21 2010 at 10:50
I've tried bow hunting (never got anything) for deer, turkey and antelope. And that was with a modern high tech compound bow and very good arrows. But have shot (rifle and shotgun) plenty of game and fowl. Can't imagine how poorly I'd fare if I had to make a weapon (spear, bow/arrow, atl atl, snare etc) to get my food. It is truly taken for granted that a fellow can go buy a rifle and some ammo and shoot up some grub. Might not be a bad thing for me to get some survival training! – Tim Rangitsch Jun 21 2010 at 18:52
Hitting things with atlatls ain't easy, that's for sure. Been at it for about six months now, and the best I can throw is minute of compost bin :). – Fearsclave Jun 22 2010 at 2:30

I now have a total of four controllers from AuberIns.com. Why so many? Because I'm a gearhead, that's why.
