Do you think there are half a million of us in the western world yet, or not yet? How many would you guess we are overall? And how many of us are in it for the lifestyle change and weight loss proportionally?

I think more - lots of people are doing Paleo but don't realise it - I pick up a trashie mag in the drs rooms and all of Hollywood are on it - no carb grass fed meat and lots of fish no sugar. I had a friend on FB telling me they are a real gym junkie and are going high protein and no carb - bang they did not realise there was a movement dedicated to the diet! I think watch this space many many more people will come on board for lots of different reasons.

So true! I was Paleo for a year before I realized I was Paleo. – Leigh Sep 9 2011 at 23:45

Yeah but I don't think Paleo is explicitly "low carb" the food quality and type makes it Paleo. Going low carb for most people means endless processed meats I think. – Noah Sep 10 2011 at 2:44

Perhaps we should all reply to be counted ;-)

I suppose we have to go by book sales and subscriber numbers of the most visible websites out there, like WAPF and MDA. Any book sellers out there with access to sales numbers?

I'm guessing that there's still not a whole lot of us. Certainly less than 1% here in Belgium. Almost everyone I talk to has never heard of it (but many like the concept).

Half a million? I wish... Maybe a few thousand.

Mark Sisson's forum has 70000 accounts. A lot of those probably aren't strict paleo, but it tells you there is certainly interest in it. – Stabby Sep 9 2011 at 23:23

70000 is still closer to a few thousand than it is to half a million :P – Katie Sep 10 2011 at 2:27
Oh and I live in the Canadian West… where we grow wheat and canola and people drive pickup trucks and get tattoos of hockey players. – Noah Sep 10 2011 at 2:48
@Katie, but that is only one website! I'm noot subscribed to it and I've been Paleo for a year. Robb Wolf gets thousands of emails EVERY DAY. This movement is HUGE. – Carly Sep 10 2011 at 10:39

I haven't met many here in Germany, nor other countries I've been to in Europe. I know there are a few and I see their posts on here, but the concept doesn't seem to be too big over here yet. It's pretty telling when the butcher a couple of blocks away has no idea what grass-fed meat is. I even brought in a German friend to ask just in case my Deutsch wasn't up to snuff. I personally only know a handful of people (10 maybe?) that are totally committed to Paleo.

Urgh, that really aggravates me when the butcher has no idea what grassfed beef is "oh you mean organic?" No I bloody don't!! WTF?! – Carly Sep 10 2011 at 10:41
yeah, real paleo folks are rare in germany but more and more people get acquinted with this concept. Though, its still a minority and almost noone knows about grass-fed or the paleolithic diet concept in general. – Primordial Nov 22 2011 at 19:34

There seems to be quite the paleo pod here in the Bay Area. I think most of the folks here were mainly introduced through CrossFit gyms.

I live in the Bay Area too. I don't know any Paleo dieter around except myself (started last week, and it already made me asymptomatic for my 10-year medical issue), although I'm guessing there might be some at Google since Googlers follow that stuff (my husband works there). – Eugenia Sep 9 2011 at 22:52

Easily half a million.

Multiple Paleo/Primal books are best sellers.

Half a million in North American alone means only only on in 1057 are doing it. It's way higher than that. I'm not a very social guy, and at-least 6 of the people I know do some kind of primal/paleo gig. I know several others at my wife's office of around 200 do too.

I don't even move in health focused circles… heck I used to be 320lbs and wasn't even close to being the fattest guy I knew. I don't even have a gym membership.

If it's one in 400 that's still 1.3m in NA alone.

Go ahead and exclude Mexico and re-do the math if you like, it's still going to be over half a million.

Yep I live in Kent in England and I know at least 6 people who eat Paleo, this shizzle is huge! Rightly so too. – Carly Sep 10 2011 at 10:42

I think 1 million at least in USA. The population of USA is about 307 million, and I believe more than 1 in 307 Americans are doing some version of Paleo whether they know it or not- Primal, Archevore, Perfect Health Diet, perhaps even WAPF, etc.!

I think the number of newbie questions here and at reddit/paleo is promising, but I'd caution there must be lots of overlap in the traffic at various websites. I visit a bunch every day and I notice many of the comments/answers are from people I recognize or who have other websites that I visit.

My sense is that the core community is still pretty small, with a rapidly growing number of casual or fringe ancestral eaters. Some people browse their way through and others put down roots.

I am surprised by all these people who say they know several people who are on the paleo diet. The first time I met another person who was eating paleo was when I went to a paleo meetup event a year after I first went paleo.
