Inspired by a previous thread ( http://paleohacks.com/questions/865/walking-with-a-weighted-vest ), I recently ordered a weighted vest (Z-fitness, adjustable from 0 to 40lbs.) to augment my home workouts. So far, I've tried it with push-ups, pull-ups, chins, dumbbell squats and dumbbell lunges. I've only loaded it with 9 to 12 lbs. so far. None of the exercises cause any problem except the push-ups. Whenever I wear it to do push-ups, I get a sharp, intense pain in the neck behind my left ear. At first I thought I might be hyperextending my neck, so I paid particular attention to that during the movement, but the pain still occurs. Anyone had a similar experience or know what may be causing this or what to do about it? I like weighted bodyweight movements, and I'd like to keep using the vest if possible.

Sounds like a pinched nerve. You might try neck flexibility stretches for increased limberness, and if that does not work, have a doctor check for bone spurs on your spine. |

Put it away for now. Are the weights loaded in the front? With a partner Id have then place a 10 lb weight on your back instead. I like carrying weight around like a sand bag or a farmers walk which works the core much better. Weighted vests should have the weigh as close to the body as possible |

Don't want to sound overly glib -- but why not just stop doing push-ups with the vest? |

Weak sauce, Eddie... I've been touting 45+ lbs for some time now, of course I'm a mesomorph so I'm inclined to bear more weight than most. Taking breaks would be the best bet, I'd guess, as well as relocation of the load position, for instance switching front to back in a rucksack (what I use). Another thing, dare I mention it, if you've been doing pushups for a while now you know the proper form without having to look up, I'd recommend keeping your face to the ground for a while, but keep your back arched properly without the visual reminder. I hope you can improve, that's pretty ladylike at the moment. |
