I've already seen this thread about restaurants: http://paleohacks.com/questions/11567/paleo-friendly-restaurants-in-seattle#axzz1XYFFblrJ

I'm spending a week in Seattle soon and I'll have access to a kitchen so I was wondering where I might find paleo-type food at decent prices. I know about the exotic meat market, which is awesome, but where do you go for your daily staples?

Thanks.

Seattle has pretty much anything you need (except raw butter) available in a number of places. It would be helpful to know where in Seattle you are staying but this list along with what everyone else has said should help no matter where your location.

You can get grass fed meats at PCC (Puget Consumer Co-op), Whole Foods, and Madison Market. Madison Market (Central Co-op) has one location in Seattle. PCC and Whole Foods have multiple locations throughout Seattle. There are also specialty meat shops which you can google which also carry grass fed meats and even mangalitsa pork.

Obviously the above places also carry seafood, organic produce and other items that may suit your needs. While there are other options the above should pretty much take care of whatever you might need.

Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle carries raw milk (Pike Place Creamery) as does Madison Market. Whole Foods does not. As one person has already mentioned there are a number of Farmer's Markets in the area open at various times during the week. You can find pastured eggs at those markets and also raw milk but arrive early as they sell out very quickly.

If you drink beer the most extensive collection will be found at Whole Foods, including gluten free beer. As for wine there are numerous great shops throughout the area. If you want a recommendation let me know.

the last time i went to the P.P creamery, they told me they weren't allowed to sell raw milk anymore due to some new food regulation taking place. To be fair, this was a few months ago, so I don't know if things have changed.... when was the last time you purchased raw milk from there? – Sunshine Sep 10 2011 at 16:55
Just yesterday :P – Michael Sep 10 2011 at 17:59
well, it looks like i'm gonna hit the market today Thanks! – Sunshine Sep 10 2011 at 18:02
@michael are you from Seattle? I now live on the east side, but I have a soft spot for peeps from Seattle! – none Sep 11 2011 at 2:25

Trader joes for pantry items

PCC for the grassfed meats and salmon! and they have organ meats in the freezer section. They have a pretty extensive section on bulk spices as well :-)

There are a bunch of farmers markets that operate around here you can find them here: http://www.seattlefarmersmarkets.org/ (PEACHES ARE IN SEASON!!!!)

And if you really do have a hankering for GOOD gluten free beer: http://bottleworksbeerstore.blogspot.com/

Green's gluten free beer (the blonde in particular) is f*king righteous.

Is there something in particular you want to eat while you're here?

Oh, the pelican cafe has some AWESOME paleo food there. http://rustypelicancafe.squarespace.com/

lemme know if you need any further clarifications and such.

I hope you have a great time in seattle!

I live in Seattle. Haven't heard of the pelican cafe, any recommendations on what to eat there? – Jake Sep 10 2011 at 16:08
any of the breakfast foods :-) you can substitute the toast and crap for potatoes or fruit. They're super accommodating. I hope you get a chance to try it out :-) – Sunshine Sep 10 2011 at 16:47

The other answers pretty much sum it up. The farmer's markets are really good, but I never get there early enough to get eggs. Our family gets most of what we don't get delivered from Trader Joe's and PCC. You can also get stuff delivered from Spud.com, Amazon Fresh, and New Roots Organics if you are going to be here a while. If you want to go visit some farms who can hook you up with the good stuff a number of them are listed here: http://www.eatwild.com/products/washington.html

If you are staying in West Seattle or South Seattle there are a few Halal stores in White Center where I've heard you can get goat meat at a decent price.

If you are close to downtown though, nothing beats Pike Place Market. I go there whenever we are downtown. The fresh seafood options are amazing. If you've never tried them I highly recommend halibut cheeks.

I literally just moved to Seattle today from the east coast & don't know anyone. Anybody interested in doing a meet up at one of these paleo-friendly places?

Well, I'm a big fan of Madison Market. So, other than the places mentioned already, I know Skagit River Ranch sells their meat at the Ballard Farmers Market year round at a fraction of the price you can get it at MM. (I love them, but they do mark up the SRR meat a whole lot!) They sell at the Bellevue Farmers Market too, but that one isn't year round.

If you do go to Madison Market, try the Biocento Eggs. A little pricey, but OMG delicious.

Also, if you head out to Whole Foods, they have quite a lot of raw cheese. There's one in particular called "Naked Goat" that's a raw goat cheese that is delicious. Also, QFC carries some Organic Valley raw cheddar.

Yes, I like Madison Market, but their prices really can't compete overall with Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, so unless it is something I can't get elsewhere, I usually don't shop there these days. I have my misgivings about Organic Valley. I would steer clear of them unless there was no other choice and I had to have cheese. :P – Michael Sep 16 2011 at 22:44

Grass-fed beef is PCC or Whole Foods. Eggs from my neighbor... However both stores have eggs but not pastured. Raw cheese is at both stores. Raw milk is available from farmers but not grocers. Madison Market carries it. Thanks Curated Wellness!
