The title pretty much says it all. I got a bit tipsy last night and was massively craving pizza. Instead of having a huge cheat we made low carb pizza instead. Well..honestly it turned out more like a quiche but oh well.

zucchini egg Parmesan cheddar beef and marinara sauce - Newmans own brand (so not complete junk) but it has 8g sugar per half cup serving and soybean oil is listed higher than olive oil in the ingredients.

If My diet is completely paleo compliant can I have a serving or less of this occasionally over meat or something? Will I be able to burn off the sugar like nothing happened if I get some exercise? Does it work that way?

Also the soybean oil- will that derail the work I am trying to do. sighs I feel stupid for cheating but relieved that I did not go all the way and eat actual pizza. I will not eat any more of the cheese bought. My bf will and he has been paleo with dairy for years now. We are working on cutting it out but he can at least eat it with no apparent ill effects.

thanks

update

Thank you all for your advice. We will be tossing it after all (though it pains me to be so wasteful)- stupid tax

Don't feel bad about throwing it out! It's either garbage in the garbage bin, or garbage in your body. – Olivia Sep 10 2011 at 17:39

What's it cost, like 3-4$? Tossing isn't going to hurt you financially. However one can of sauce isnt going to manifest in a month or week's worth of clean eating. You're fine either way, don't sweat it. – ben61820 Sep 10 2011 at 18:07

I’m pretty “meh” about 8 g of sugar. I think that is pretty trivial in the big scheme of things, especially when it is probably the only added sugar you will probably eat all day or even all week. (The only issue I would with 8g is if it tasted too sweet.)

I have a bigger problem with soybean oil, and if money wasn’t too big of an issue I would throw it away and find an alternative variety that was all olive instead. I try to be fairly strict with omega-6 oils at home because I know they are difficult to avoid when I go out. I suppose if you never eat at restaurants and never eat nuts, then I probably would not worry about it too much with this one jar (though I would buy a different jar next time). With hormesis and stuff, I wouldn’t sweat it too much if this was your only omega-6 exposure.

Toss it in the trash and move on. Don't worry about it. It's not worth fretting over.

Not real sauce in my opinion. If it has sugar and other oils besides olive it's junk to me, but as long as you tolerate those things it won't kill you. If eating it is going to make you feel super bad, you're better off tossing it.

well you beat me...when I get drunk I eat whole pizzas. & the best part is that I don't hate myself for it, I embrace it.

If you don't want to eat it, donate it to a food pantry.

$3.50 shouldn't impact your decision about whether to eat it or not. I buy some Newman's marinara to have around in a pinch but won't buy the kinds with soybean oil. You could certainly handle the sugar, unless you are overweight, have autoimmune issues, etc. The soybean oil is pure crap. If you are going to stress about eating it, then ditch it and move on.

Save it for when you have to bring something for a pot luck (and you don't care if the people think you're bringing something paleo or not )or put it in the charity bin for the Thanksgiving food drives.

It blows my mind your concern is over the sugar and oil in the sauce, when you were drunk when you bought it. Do you know what alcohol is and what it does in the body? I say if you're willing to drink, go ahead and eat this kind of sauce too.

At least alcohol consumption has some redemptive value. OP didn't say she was hammered, she said "I was a bit tipsy". That sounds pretty fairly in the 'moderate' range, especially considering she was functional enough to make a pizza. Puritan. – Scratch Jan 9 at 2:29

OP wasn't hammered. Give me a break. Are you straight edge too? – primalpat Jan 9 at 2:56
I know exactly how hammered someone is when they lose the ability to read. OP was hammered. ;-) – greymouser Jan 11 at 20:38

Soybean oil can generate a free radical cascade and in combination with sugar create inflammation that can take weeks to clear. Never eat junk food.

Don't ever feel stupid for cheating. Enjoy it, and deal with it the next day. Fast, if you feel like it. Drink green tea.
