Knowing that Vitamin C is a metals chelator, I am wondering about the timing of taking it with magnesium. Does it negatively affect absorption? I have not been able to find a reference, but I have noticed that there are combined supplements, although that by itself does not mean much. Can anybody shed some light? Thanks.
This is a rat study, but vitamin C doesn't appear to have a positive or negative effect on magnesium absorption: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19271421
It would appear that a magnesium deficiency leads to lower serum vitamin C, however.
Please reference the site "http://www.acu-cell.com/acn.html " and click on Magnesium at the top. Go to the bottom of the next page shown and click on the bottom link for more detail about Magnesium/Calcium. On the next page, there is a defintion of the Synergists, followed immediately below by Atagonists/Inhibitors. You will see that Vit C listed as an antagonist (meaning when taken with Magnesium).
Further the study that is referenced in Answer 1 above is discussing serum Mg levels, not what is in your stomach (i.e. Magnesium being taken with Vitamin C at the same time).
