I looked through the forum and can't find anything so here is my question. I have been eating paleo for 4 months. I also do crossfit. A couple of days ago I bought whey protein and drank it after my wod. I felt fine, had lunch a couple hours later and felt really sick and almost puked a few times. I thought at first my left overs went bad. Didnt work out the next day and didn't drink protein. Today I did my wod, had protein powder mixed with about 6-8 ounces water like last time and felt fine. About 1pm I had Steak fajitas and I couldn't finish eating because I again felt really sick and had to lay in my car for a while. Has anyone experienced this? I don't drink milk except for a occasional sbux coffe and I'm always fine.Occasionally I can handle some sprinkled cheese on something. I have ate coldstone once... You are getting the picture.

Lisa, I just gave up dairy (including and especially whey) two months ago, and now when I do have it, I immediately break out in hives and get an upset stomach. I switched to egg protein instead with no issues, but now whenever I do have dairy, my body immediately lets me know it doesn't want me to go back to eating it! Also, whey used to break me out and leave me really congested whenever I'd eat it. I had a much harder time losing weight, and I was tired ALL THE TIME. |

Whey gives me the same symptoms described by Laura + itchy eyes, no matter which brand or ingredients I tried. Casein (milk proteins in "milk solids") intolerance is a problem for many; I have no problem with lactose. I tried egg protein, but decided why not eat real food instead - it is much cheaper and more paleo than over-processed powders. |

Where I used to work they had a selection of various juices we could drink, one was a "protein shake" with whey powder in it. I chugged it, and about an hour later I had to run out back and fight some serious dry heaves (would have definitely hurled if I wasn't so stubborn). Makes sense to me. It actually turned against the whole "shake" idea. I now try for real food all the time. If I need a quick meal, I go for a bite of coconut oil, and some beef jerky or salami, a few plantain chips, and a nori sheet or two. |

How are you sure its the whey?? They often add gums like carragean to whey which may cause gastrointestinal problems. |

Whey protein isn't completely lactose-free. If you have a bad lactose reaction (i.e. if unfermented whole milk gives you problems), I would cease attempting to drink whey shakes immediately. Also, almost all whey powders are full of additives, like lecithin, MgOx, sugar, flavors/colors, other vitamins/minerals, etc. I use the Jarrow 100% pure whey on occasion, but it's a rarity in the store aisles for having nothing but whey (with 3% lactose) and a bit of lecithin. |

First you need to try real whey, non industrialized one. Its best to make it yourself from raw milk easily in 3-6 hours. You can also try to find one but you again risk some form of industrial toxins from hi heat treatment. You can try both goat milk or cow milk. If that doesn't make you bad, then processing is in question or type of milk (goat and cows have different type of cassein among other things). Then you will switch brands, but protein shakes shouldn't be part of regular food anyway [ only as temporal solution ] . |
