Ladies and gents just want to ask a question that has been on my mind since i started eating paleo. And that is "How much protein in the form of chicken breast is too much?" I am a huge fan of chicken breast and also steak. If you can eat to your hearts content in the form of chicken breast and steak then i am a lucky guy. I was told by my cousin who lost 45kgs on the paleo that he was eating unlimited amounts of steak and chicken breast and did not put on any weight but had the opposite effect. What do you guys think?
As a general rule of thumb I would say go for it. It is physically difficult to over eat protein; you just feel over full and can't stuff anymore in past a certain point.
I think this is why a paleo-esque diet works so well, once you dial in your food quality it takes a concerted effort to over eat.
The thing to be aware of with chicken is the poor omega 3/6 ratio from factory farmed chickens. This can be avoided by eating pastured chickens as much as possible. Also the breast is very lean, so doesn't contain much fat anyway, so not so much of an issue.
For the same reason the skin of factory farmed chickens should be avoided.
All other things being equal if you eat unlimited amounts of steak and/or chicken breast (or anything for that matter) you will indeed put on weight. There is no magic food that you can eat unlimited amounts of.
"How much protein in the form of chicken breast is too much?" The answer is, while not perhaps what you’d like to hear, however much leads to a body composition that you are not looking for.
Protein is extremely satiating. I honestly cannot imagine someone actually getting fat by over eating things lean chicken breasts. Theoretically, sure. But not in practice.
for example, I have some frozen chicken tenderloins, which are very lean. To eat 1000 calories, I would have to eat well over two pounds of this chicken, which is like 240 grams of protein. And that is just 1000 calories. I just don't see anyone realistically overeating lean protein. This is one thing that confuses me about certain parts of the paleo movement, the emphasis on the satiating property of fat. I mean, I can down a stick of butter without much problem, but two pounds of lean chicken (roughly calorically equivalent) - not a chance.
