Before Paleo (january 2011) I was already on my own path to moving away from SAD foods I just didnt have a particular name for it. I think over the past 10 years or so I have become perceived as food snob of sorts. if you have a full family on all sides that eat SAD and althought they all came from "grandma's" ways of cooking and eating fresh and in season have all resorted to packaged this and that. They dont seem to rememeber what plain foods (not bland but not frankenfood) taste like. The family knows that I cant eat red meat due to and IBS issue that has been ongoing for 8+ years and that I prefer fresh (or perceived fresher) foods than MCNASTY, Booger King and Taco Smell, (our lovely names for such places).
If you go out to dinner do you ever feel guilty that because if you a more expensive place has been chosen? (i do realize the expense is relative...better food better health but if they arent eating paleo then they dont realize that concept)
I just keep trying to feed my family as close to Paleo as they will allow and keep trudging forward with myself trying to improve my food sources.
*edited to state that most of this was before paleo so even though i was stating that i wanted better food, i just wasnt losing weight....now that i am losing a little weight here and there it may be sinking in... Theresa
I'm majoring in Dietetics so I have an excuse! lol.
Honestly my family is beginning to put together some of the basic tenets of Paleo based on our chats.
I'm becoming more family doctor than food snob...and that's where I think we should try to be with our families. Help them learn to heal.
I can always find food to eat wherever I go with friends, but definitely the ones that have actually realized that Paleo is not something I'm doing lightly will go out of their way to find something with many more options for me with a bonus if the food is locally sourced. They seem to like the challenge in addition to trying things on a new menu. I do live in NY so variety, at any price level, is very available. We're all pretty honest as well, so if cash is low then it's "nooooooo" and something else is found.
It's awesome that you're really working at keeping your family healthy and it sounds like you're a strong lady. Keep that chin up! :)
Yes they do, but they also mention within a few breaths that whatever I'm doing must be working for me!
So overall, they are very supportive.
My wife is even more supportive, she came along for the evolutionary-eating ride with me!
Thankfully my husband and I are on the same page with food. And yes, we eat differently than pretty much everyone (we have friends at CrossFit that eat like us and it's SO nice to talk about food with them). Everyone else just thinks your nuts to spend so much money on food, yet they compliment us on how great we look! Yet they aren't willing to give up their fast food and crap.
Ultimately our physical appearance speaks for itself.
I get food snob all the time from my family. When we rarely go out to eat, I try to go to locally owned places so that I can have better access to the chef or owner. Sadly, These places are often expensive. I felt so bad about this extra expense last weekend, that I didn't dare make a peep about the worm in my fish. (it was dead). My husband refuses to believe that organic food and grassfed meat is better, instead of reading all the articles/research I send him, he will just call me a snob and moan and complain everytime we go to the grocery store.
My friends regarded me as a food snob before I went paleo, because I was a big time foodie. My family just thought I was crazy.
However, NOW all of that has subsided because EVERYONE has seen the results. And now, they're coming to me for advice and direction. This has prompted me to take my career in a new direction.
I realized the other day that I am a food snob, lol. There are certain places I refuse to eat. Sure, I could find something to eat there, but quality has become #1 for me and I know these particular places are the lowest quality they can be while keeping their doors open.
If I am going out to eat, I am willing to pay a little more for better quality food.
Family and friends just think I'm a little strange. Oddly enough, friends are more accepting of my choices than family. I've even gotten a few friends to change some of their eating habits.
My cooking is not cheap. I cook everything, I cook 3 times a day, and I buy quality beef and vegetables. My mother knows it's important to me as she notices I get really healthier and healthier. My father, sister and brothers all have that "I don't care about health" attitude and consider themselves healthy. Frequent farting, acne, obesity, ... show that is not the case.
Whatever I do to convince them my diet is very healthy, that I get rewarded for all the work I do (I'm 20, have to work hard to be able to pay all this, do all the shopping myself every day, all the cooking on my own after everybody else has eaten, I have exams, ...), they would probably be glad if I throw all the good, healthy things away.
Last time my father got pissed because I was cooking everything. He always tries to make me eat bread, fruit or nuts because he thinks it doesn't matter for immunity.
I don't think they see me as a food snob, but I do feel like it. I go to expensive places all the time to get what I need (organic stores, for example, are very expensive here, take for example extra virgin coconut oil).
That's why I work hard to get enough money. It's not easy being paleo, but it's a nice challenge and it has tons of advantages (no more farting, allergies reduced tremendously in one month, no acne, no smelling, sleeping great, ...).
I think people thought that way of me before I found Paleo, but for me its more an issue of food allergies, and cleanliness of food.
I don't make a big deal, I just don't eat if there is nothing there for me at the place they choose (rarely happens-except food courts).
I think people make a bigger deal out of it because it makes them uncomfortable. People just don't get it....the last time out, my sister in law served me a soup that was made for everyone and took the beef out of it since I'm allergic....mind you, it was a beef broth based soup.
