Is chewing sugar free gum ok? Is drinking unsweetened black iced tea ok? Is drinking red/white ok? Is eating plantain chips w/ palm olein as the only ingredient ok?

Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes. I wouldn't chew a lot of SF gum, the fake sugar can sometimes induce an insulin response in some people. Unsweetened black tea is perfectly fine. Red wine is better than white. Eat the plantain chips in moderation, they probably contain a lot of natural sugar, which may induce cravings. – sherpamelissa Sep 20 2011 at 13:51

Only you can decide what is okay for you. But at least you are thinking about things and working it out. Sherpa is spot on and coming from real experience (as always). – Dave S. Sep 20 2011 at 14:42

As an adult, you may eat anything you want at any time that you want.

Paleo is not that difficult. The strictest eat only things that could have been hunted/gathered, in season, and require no cooking.

After that, it's pretty much up to you how serious you want to be. I promise you that there is no such thing as paleo police. You might be afraid that they'd kick down your door in the middle of the night and take you to a re-education camp, but those camps do not exist.

How do I know there are no paleo police: First, true paleos would be sleeping in the middle of the night. Secondly, police states and their armies live off wheat.

I could use some time at a re-education camp. – Dave S. Sep 20 2011 at 14:36

I never thought of the "sleep at night" element protecting me from the paleo police. Of course, I'm the rare 64-year-old enjoying full nights of healthy sleep, so that's the time I can claim to be "strict" Paleo! – Nance Sep 20 2011 at 15:10

There is a large "archive" of information in the form of previous threads that covers these foods in detail.

For example, this is a thread on sugar free chewing gum...http://paleohacks.com/questions/5731/chewing-gum-conversation#axzz1YSir4Cht

And this is a thread on tea...http://paleohacks.com/questions/14241/what-kinds-of-teas-are-great-good-ok-not-to-recommend-on-a-daily-basis#axzz1YSir4Cht

The great thing about a site like PaleoHacks is that most of the questions you might have have been answered at some point, so doing a search first is always useful.

Have fun and good luck!

ASPARTAME is EVIL. EVIL, I tell you.

It IS the reason you are addicted to sugar free gum. Ask yourself, why do they put aspartame in gums and sodas that are already sweetened in sugar? Why do people get 'addicted' to diet soda and sugar free gum?

If you doubt, read the research on what aspartame is and does to your BRAINS. I watched someone "quit diet soda cold turkey" and she basically acted like a heroin addict in withdrawal for a week. It was really sad and scary.

Spry makes a decent substitute to wean you off with. PLEASE STOP with the aspartame it is EVIL.

This PSA was brought to you by someone who hates aspartame. :)

For gum, you could try Falim gum from Turkey (available on Amazon for about $0.10/piece). It has no sugar or other sweeteners, and light or no flavor.
