I've read information that supports both sides of the argument. On those uncomfortable occasions when one has eaten too much, does a glass of red wine help or hinder?

I think that the bitterness/astringency of a high-tannin red wine could certainly help stimulate digestion, just like traditional digestive bitters, although maybe after a couple of glasses, you are simply less likely to care about what your digestive system is doing. |

I haven't tried a glass of wine after overindulging, but if I drink wine alongside a meal that may be a little over the top I feel like it helps. I once flipped through a recipe book for digestifs, and most were tiny sweet liqueurs with things like anise-seed. I wonder if they worked because of the pain relieving sugar opiate thing, alongside the digestive help of the herbs? |
