Fellow paleo dieters i am so confused. I am pretty happy on the paleo diet because it allows me to eat the foods i love. Steak, eggs and bacon, mushrooms, chicken breast. So on and so forth. The confusion is coming from the fact that i eat too much. Or am i? I have an omellette in the morning consisting of 4 eggs along with mushrooms and also 5 slices of diced bacon. I then have a few strawberries and later on about 2pm i have a chicken breast or two. And at night i have about 2 to 3 steaks. Am i doing it all wrong? Or am i going to defeat the whole purpose and end up doing more harm to myself then good?
Keep it simple. If you are responding to hunger and eating 'real' foods then relax about it. If we knew how long you'd been on this diet then that might also be useful. If you are starting out obese then consider that there is a big energy demand in hauling your mass around.
Personally I find the ability to fast quite a good indicator of whether I am 'doing it right'. Depending on how long you've been 'paleo', if you can go comfortably without food for 18-24 hours (without a hunger shakes or other detrimental effects), then what you describe above sounds fine to me.
If after a several weeks, you are getting larger around the waist/visibly storing MORE fat (ignore 'weight') then there might be other issues to consider.
If you feel good and you're not gaining weight or noticing any ill effects then you're probably doing okay. It's hard to know if that's too much protein without knowing more about your stats though.
Eating foods you love is great – good for the soul.
The only way for you, or us, to know if you “eat too much” is whether you are meeting your goals by eating what you are eating.
You ask if you are going to defeat the whole purpose. What is your purpose? What is your goal? I’m not being snarky. There are many of us here with different goals.
Also, if you’re going to tell us what you’re eating, even in vague terms, it will be easier for us to give some kind of advice if you also tell us your stats, like sex, height, weight, age, some kind of medical history, etc.
And what the hell is a kilogram?
Nick, How long have you been eating this way and how have your stats changed? Also, what are your goals? (Lose weight, more energy, immune system, better recovery from workouts, etc.)?
At the end of the day, if you are getting leaner, I would not worry about it.
At the risk of stating the obvious, accurately measure how much you eat every day so you can quantify it.
Take a few minutes to enter your food into fitday.com or similar and make sure your estimates are correct. This can be a nuisance to do every day of your life, but do it for a week or two just to see. Many are surprised that the calories and/or nutrition that they are eating is a lot different than they expect.
