We all know by now that sleep induced by a late night drink impairs it's restorative effects; but have there been any studies carried out as to the effects on sleep from "natural" sleep aids such as valerian, or over the counter products like Nytol or Kalms?

Just curious...

My ex-wife somehow acquired the idea that it's a sleep aid, but I never took it - despite my lifelong struggles with insomnia - because it smells exactly like the most awful feet ever.

Cats love it. Really. :) – Harry Sep 22 2011 at 14:14
My cat doesn't like the smell. But it does work for me, getting me in the mood to go to sleep. – maurile Sep 22 2011 at 16:41
Do not under any circumstance leave an open bottle of the capsules in your car on a hot day. Worst smell ever! It does help me sleep like a baby sometimes though, just have to down it quickly and try not to breath in. – Happy Now Sep 22 2011 at 20:09

I've taken valerian before and it is, IMHO, the best "natural" sleep aid around.

I wouldn't recommend it as a nightly, or even semi-nightly thing, however, as it can leave you groggy, but it is a great help on those nights where you are amped up and facing the possibility of staring at the insides of your eyelids for hours on end.

I tried valerian capsules when I was an insomniac. It's really like fighting a dust storm with a broom. If your brain wants you to be up, for whatever reason (blah diet blah lifestyle...), it's going to keep you up. I remember only a few instances where it helped me sleep, but it started giving me night terrors, which has been a reported side-effect in studies, so I stopped. From what I read, there have only been a few studies on it's efficacy, and most of it's therapeutic value is described in folk medicine.

Another option is Kava Kava (Kava root.) My friends and I used to fill nalgene bottles full of the extract+water, which tasted awful, and bring them to work to make our dead-end jobs a little more tolerable. It relaxed us, made us a little more talkative. If you have a higher dose it will help you sleep without any side-effects or grogginess. It fulfills the social role of alcohol in some Polynesian cultures. There was some scare about it causing liver damage, but that was some isolated incidents from improper processing; cheap brands using other parts of the plant besides the root. You can order quality Kava from some places based in Hawaii.
