I am thinking of taking recombinant human growth hormone and was wondering what the Paleos think about this drug(however "un"-paleo it may be). I have heard many horror stories about altered bone structure and facial appearance. My interests in this drug are to thicken cartilage(especially vocal cords). ANy ideas???
There's plenty of other ways to raise your bodies own production of the NATURAL form of it (as in non-synthetic). High intensity strength training, low carb dieting, getting full 8hrs+ a night sleeps, intermittent fasting, certain herbs like goji berries (acts as a secretagogue), mucuna pruriens, deer or elk antler velvet and colostrum and probably more things I haven't thought of.
There isn't enough context in this post. Information like age, what GH readings you got on an endocrine panel. The standard GH deficiency test is an i.v. push of insulin after an overnight fast. What were the results?
If you've had no tests done and are looking to deepen your voice or something, testosterone would be the obvious route for that. What was your testosterone level? If it was low and you're young, 9 times out of 10 it's a zinc deficiency.
Intervening directly in our intricate endocrine cascades with exogenous hormones is a terrible idea unless you've ensured that you don't have any nutrient deficiencies (which you very likely do) and the consequences of no intervention are dangerous. What you're describing sounds like recreational use of the wrong hormone for an arbitrary reason.
My idea is that taking HGH is a stupid and potentially dangerous idea. I don't quite understand your reason for wanting to take it. As an aside, your vocal cords aren't made of cartilage.
You're not likely going to find many paleo folks being ok with it. I don't think there's any problem with supplemental steroids or hormones, if you're a strength athlete or bodybuilder. The horror stories are 99% fiction, the results are significant.
You would have to take significant doses of growth hormone to get facial and bone distortions of the kind you describe. Barry Bonds' ring finger got bigger, and eventually he needed a larger hat. Though of course the slugger maintains he never "knowingly" injected HGH.
Somatopause (Age Related Growth Hormone Deficiency) is a medically recognized condition for which growth hormone can be, and is prescribed. HGH runs around $1,200 - 1,500 per month.
There is much to be said for Zak's list of natural ways to enhance your growth hormone levels. Inn the same vein, you might want to check out a product called Secretropin (a secretagogue):
I have no first-hand experience with the product, nor with the company.
