I think I've found a real winner for a paleo friendly snack - any thoughts? Only plantains, palm oil, and a bit of salt! Tastes great too

Seems like the only concern would be with slightly high amount of carbs (if you eat the whole bag), but this is a rare snack that I actually get satisfied with just eating one "serving", which is just 20g of carbs.

Bought them last week from the health food store near my Bikram joint on a whim. They were good both on their own and with guacamole. I would have around for a fun treat but not as an everyday thing. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Sep 27 2011 at 17:53

i don't do palm oil for environmental concerns... – smartcookie Sep 27 2011 at 17:54
I love them as a treat. – Shari Bambino Sep 27 2011 at 21:21
Yeah, it's nice to find healthy alternatives to treats....but even a paleo treat is still a treat. – carne Dec 1 2011 at 5:13
@smartcookie - I had the same concern and emailed the company, receiving the following response: "Inka Crops sources 100% of the Palm oil used from a Peruvian grower and adheres to the USAID Alternative Development Program policy that benefits both the entire society and the environment in which the palm tree is grown. Our supplier, Palmas/Industrias del Espino, has Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), uses Biological Pest Control, has ISO 9001:2000 certification and its currently implementing the ISO 14001, a rigorous Environment Management Standards to help protect the environment, prevent " – findchris Jan 31 at 21:09

I find that things like that are OK in moderation, but keep in mind they are hyper-palatable, so they probably aren't a good idea if you're trying to lean out.

Yum, though!

I think they're delicious. They also do sweet potato chips, too. Yum.

Turbana also makes some pretty delicious plantain chips, as well, if you choose their "plain" ones (their seasoned ones have "natural flavors" in it; plain has only plantains, palm oil, and salt).

I'm watching my carbs right now, so I can't partake, so please enjoy some for me, okay? :D

I have a salmon recipe that utilizes these plantain chips, putting the carbs in the background: Paleo Salmon Sticks
