My husband is having oral surgery to repair receding gums just before Thanksgiving. (Seriously terrible timing, but whatever.) He was told to expect 6-8 weeks for full recovery, as they'll be grafting skin from the roof of his mouth onto the gums. Does anyone have suggestions as to what he'll be able to eat to keep paleo and to keep calories up? He'd prefer not to use whey protein powder as a supplement.

What I did was just to put everything into a blender.

Raw eggs, raw liver, meat, berries, coconut milk, veggies, bone broth, salad, whatever you eat...

Smoothies with high fat raw cream, berries and juice is just delicious!

Yes, you will definitively get tired blending all your food, but it will do the trick.

I've been eyeing smoothies with raw eggs, but I'm not sure he'll go for things like raw liver. I guess that blender will come in handy, though. Thanks! – blueballoon Sep 30 2011 at 0:09

Before undergoing such Drastic surgery, have you explored Periolase treatment for gum disease? There is no cutting needed and it is very effective. Look at Google and Youtube for information.

Interesting. Here's one link: doctorbase.org/index.php/2010/06/09/… – Dragonfly Sep 29 2011 at 2:42
Interesting. Thanks for the link. I'm not sure my husband's eligible for that, but it's worth a look. – blueballoon Sep 30 2011 at 0:08

Tallow, for one thing.

Put bones and beef fat and suet in your slow cooker with water and a little vinegar.

Refrigerate the results to cause the tallow to form a nice thick waxy crust with gelatin underneath (which is broth). Spoon the tallow off (might need a crowbar) and put it aside for quick appetite suppression. Much better than lard.

I would like to try this as it seems rather cost effective, but I am kind of concerned about the palatability of it... is it yummy? Or just edible? – HamHock Sep 29 2011 at 2:04
Just edible, really, like lard. If you carry some in a pocket container, it's less prone to melt there, but it still melts in your mouth. I just think it's probably the most concentrated thing for appetite suppression, that's all. Oh, somebody mentioned clarified butter for that purpose, too, I gotta try some. – Huey Sep 29 2011 at 4:49

Coconut milk smoothies (with raw eggs, if desired.)

Home-made ice cream.

Home-made jello (from Great Lakes gelatin powder), sweetened with fruit juice.
