We just got back from a trip overseas.

Flying with a baby on a long flight is incredibly stressful and difficult, and despite trying to take extra good care of myself, I'm now run down and sick with a brutal head cold.

I am taking naps during the day when the baby naps to try to get some extra rest now, but what foods/drinks should I be taking in now to rid myself of this nasty bug?

Any favorite "sick Paleo" foods to try?

Thanks!

Sarah

good question. I haven't been sick at all since switching to paleo so I can't help you here. – The Loon Sep 30 2011 at 0:33
Hot liquids like tea and broth. I find about half a lime's worth of fresh squeezed lime juice in my morning glass of water makes me feel good. – ben61820 Sep 30 2011 at 1:23
I take it Vicksburg Vap-o-Rub is not paleo? – Huey Sep 30 2011 at 8:21
Vicks, not Vicksburg! How do you disable this damn spelling software on an iPad? – Huey Sep 30 2011 at 8:22
with a hammer :) – sage_ Sep 30 2011 at 9:17

Here you go, feel better!

  • The spiciest Thai food that I can barely handle while wrapped in a blanket at home on the couch to sweat that bug out

  • Double time Vitamin C

  • A mug of hot water with a smashed piece of ginger, lemon juice, squeeze of honey, big fat splash of whiskey - homemade Nyquil. Works on the nose, soothes the throat. Is good with or without the booze.

  • Peppermint and/or ginger tea

  • Staying away from dairy

  • Chicken soup and chicken broth

  • Tons of water

  • Extra garlic in my food-

  • Kiwi cold from the fridge, frozen berries that I snack on slowly-

Peppermint/ginger tea FTW! Great suggestions, haven't thought about the garlic before, will try that when/if I get sick (it's been awhile, lol). – Nemesis Sep 30 2011 at 0:25

Chicken soup with homemade bone broth! Lots of nutrients and the warm broth is so nice when you have a cold.

Not food exactly, but 40,000 IUs of Vitamin D for 1-2 days kicks out any cold virus for me.

Thanks for the tip! Do you take other supplements to round out all the Vitamin D intake? – Sarah Sep 29 2011 at 17:10
(I get nervous taking that much of a fat soluble vitamin...) – Sarah Sep 29 2011 at 17:11

I agree with Ms. Dragonfly. Vitamin D is absolutely awesome. – vdh1979 Sep 29 2011 at 17:33

Sarah, check this link out on VitaminD. trackyourplaque.com/blog/2010/01/… – vdh1979 Sep 29 2011 at 17:35
For supplements, I've found that Rhodiola has been incredibly effective in helping me adapt to stress and the like. I believe I stumbled across it through Mark Sisson's recommendation. I got the Now brand through Amazon, I believe. – Tyler Sep 29 2011 at 17:44

Attack it from all sides. Take 1000mg+ C and 20000IU+ D per day. Drink echinacea and elder flower teas with honey and lemon. Pick up some Umcka Cold Care (Pelargonium sidoides extract) from your local Vitamin Shoppe or Whole Foods and take it 4x-5x daily. Finally, make sure you keep getting that rest you're talking about.

I should add, you can make hot tea out of red pepper flakes, which can help your sinuses, but if you are prone to migraines, be careful with this method; I've triggered migraines before by doing this. – air_hadoken Sep 29 2011 at 18:18
Thanks! I am planning on making a SUPER hot and spicy paleo (ish) hot and sour soup in my crockpot tomorrow... hoping that red chili paste helps! :-) – Sarah Sep 30 2011 at 0:06

Cut up a 1/4 of a lemon in hot water. Drink the water, eat the lemon. Works for me!

Home made ginger-kombucha, home made bone broth, extra vit C & D (I also eat raw liver but that may be pushing it for a lot of people lol)

I have yet to be sick since starting Paleo, which is odd because I used to average 2-4 cold per year. If I did though, it would be plenty of vitamin D either via supplement or sunlight.

Whenever animals get sick one of the ways you can tell is that they wont eat, so Id probably fast for a decent amount of time.

Lay down and sleep. Not a food but it works for me.

I am sleeping as much as possible with a baby in the house. (The house looks like it, too! It's so messy...) – Sarah Sep 30 2011 at 11:28
