i can go 24+ hours fasting with little hunger. there is an obvious drop in physical energy, but the real issue is that a sly form of anger, aggression and depression kicks in - the world just isn't friendly in this state of mind. obviously an easy answer is: don't fast, eat every 4-5 hours as needed, yadda yadda. i'm curious though, who actually feels better fasting or on very low carbs? i need to at least eat some bananas, some coconut water, rice or yams to balance my mental health.
I know everyone calls it IF, but I just call it skipping breakfast and I do this almost everyday. Cup of coffee and I'm off to work till about 1 when I eat my first meal. If I eat breakfast I'm a little less energy and hungry for more through the morning. I dont deny myself though. If I want breakfast I have it, otherwise its just breakfast for lunch (eggs and bacon ....). What really makes a difference is when I eat dinner. Some times I work later and dont eat till 8...I wont need breakfast, if I eat at 6 or earlier I'm more likely to have it.
Firstly I think you’re missing the middle ground. You speak of fasting for 24+ hours and then eating every 4-5 hours.
If you’re going to start IFing I would advise that it greatly helps to already be what people refer to as “keto-adapted.” Keep in mind that all of us human beings are actually always burning both fat and glucose no matter how keto-adapted or not keto-adapted one thinks they are.
The more you are keto-adapted you are, in other words the less glucose you consciously take in, the less classic hunger pangs you will have. I would reckon that your grumpiness is a result of these hunger pangs. This is of paramount importance once you start “fasting”, in other words simply eating less frequently (I think it helps thinking in less drastic ways. Thinking “OK I’m going to start IFing” etc can lead to over-think.).
So, I’d say that if you first eat LC for a good month to two months, get fully used to that lifestyle and the way your hunger signals, satiety signals, routines in general, all adapt, you will be in a better place to perhaps more naturally begin IFing.
I feel much better on VLC and IF. If I eat too many carbs I get a carb craving/crash headache with the 'I MUST EAT NOW OR DIE" feeling. The kind that comes from sugar crashes. As long as I stay VLC and IF I can eat as much as I want and not get low blood sugar.
I have been LC to VLC for years and regularly randomly IF for 23-72 hours and this includes working outside at hard physical labor for 10 hours a day. I have tons of energy but if I eat carbs I get low energy and a mood on.
Can't imagine fructose is balancing your mental health!
But you asked how others are doing so: I feel great and spiked with mental energy when I don't eat. However, just last night I had some urge, craving...not quite sure how to put it. Maybe boredom, sadness (Last day of island vacation)..I was going to buy a chocolate bar. Would have opted for any kind of fat...bought a take away coffee with milk instead. Did the trick and I was fine. I skip the carbs because I remember all to well, how difficult it was to get through the first couple of weeks. Not going back there! And all of this was 30 minutes after dinner. Probably not enough fat, since I can't jump into the restaurant and add coconut oil to every dish. I think the sugar addiction is always there and it takes a long time to kick. I started filling the gaps with dried figs, apricots and whatever Paleo friendly "junk" I could find. Now, I realize I don't even touch those sweets. Maybe you have not gotten over the hump yet. Haven't eliminated sugar enough?
i don't 'get' the whole IF thing. i love food and eating, and have tried IF, but saw absolutely no point. i did not feel better. like you, i was in a bad mood. cause i was hungy, and needlessly denying myself food!
people talk about being less hungry on paleo, or LC diets, and i don't get that. 3 meals a day for me, thank you. and i see no problem with that.
Carbs definitely put a smile on my face. Brain cells can only use glucose for energy so it's important to provide the brain with a steady supply of glucose from fruits and veggies. I just took a swig of some apple juice and downed half a cantaloupe. Off to the gym.
I eat VLC/ZC, typically dinner only, sometimes skip that. I drink coffee/decaf during the day with coconut oil and heavy cream. I also drink water. Every now and then a raw egg or two in the AM. I always feel invigorated and happy.
How's your sleep? I found that going to bed closer to when it gets dark and sleeping 9-10 hours in total darkness (even if you're not asleep the whole time) made a world of difference.
