hi, i heard alot of good things about egg shells - calcium plus other minerals. so i was wondering how to dry and grind them? what r the best methods (always more than one)? and i heard salmonella is on the shells? is that true and, if so, would drying out the shells first before grinding kill the salmonella? thx

Danny Roddy just had a blog post on homemade eggshell calcium. He boils the shells to kill off any nasties, dries them, then pulverizes 'em in a coffee grinder. |

The only time I ever bothered to do this, I fed the shells back to my chickens. The point of drying and grinding in that case is to make it unrecognizable as eggshells to the chickens, so you don't inadvertently encourage egg-breaking by them. For human consumption, I suppose it would be safest to boil the shells before drying (in a dehydrator, in a low over (< 200 F), or just on a kitchen counter in a dry climate. Keep flies off, though.), as Beth-WeightMaven suggested. Just make sure you're getting plenty of Vitamins D and K so your body knows what to do with the calcium. |
