I am currently on a medication for chronic migraine (Topiramate) that requires me to avoid ketosis. As an aside, one of the reasons I am going Paleo is to test the theory that grains may be causing my migraines, so I am hopeful that down the road I may be able to taper off and eliminate the Topiramate.

In the meantime, however, I am struggling to find enough carbohydrate to keep out of ketosis. Veggies just aren't very carb dense. Sweet potatoes work, but I'm looking for similar foods that have some calorie density to them.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

@Domer88 -- why do you have to avoid ketosis? – Patrik Jul 7 2010 at 22:41
@Domer88 -- I had massive success ending my migraines by going Paleo and avoiding wheat. It was completely accidental. Brent Pottenger had the same thing happen to him. – Patrik Jul 7 2010 at 22:42
When on Topiramate you have to avoid ketosis because if your blood is too acidic it stresses your kidneys and causes bone demineralization. Two reasons I want to get off the meds. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Paleo will let me do that. – Domer88 Jul 8 2010 at 17:36

Vegetables:

Sweet potatos. Yams. Squash. Pumpkin. Butternut squash. Carrots. Parsnips. Onions. Beets. Taro. Celeriac. Cassava or Manioc. Jerusalem-artichokes. Chinese waterchestnuts. Potatoes. Sweet corn.*

Nuts:

Sweet Chestnuts. Cashew nuts. Pistachio nuts.

Fruit:

Just a random list of possiblities in no particular order. I realise some are limited depending on where you live.

*A more debatable option.

Sweet corn is less debatable if it's local and on the cob. Or maybe it just seems less debatable. – John R Jul 13 2010 at 18:03
Pumpkin? Not a lot of carbs in that... – Korion Jan 14 2012 at 13:36

Richard at FreeTheAnimal recently posted on coconut water -- not an insane amount of carbs in it, but man, they're some tasty carbs nonetheless:

I had my first taste yesterday. Color me converted.

I'll definitely try it. Where's the best place to find it? I don't recall ever seeing coconut water in the supermarket – Domer88 Jul 8 2010 at 17:39
I don't know if you have Wegmans in your area; that's where I found it (in the "health foods" section). I know Amazon carries it (because what don't they carry?) -- past that, I'm not sure. – tattooedchef Jul 9 2010 at 3:57
I am fortunate to live 5 minutes away from a Wegmans. I'll check it out. Thanks. – Domer88 Jul 9 2010 at 20:37

Potatoes, sweet potatoes, and white rice are what I eat when I eat carbs. And berries, but I don't know how significant of a source that is.

ditto what daniel says but you could also play with all the hard squashes out there like pumpkin, pattypan squash, butternut squash, etc. Butternut squash is stupiddelicious.

Par boil sweet potatoes or yams, crush them in a pan with some heat, add butter, and rosemary/thyme and a small amount of cinnamon.

Love pan roasting some sort of squash face down in a little butter/lard and then flipping over to crisp up a bit.

Also, if you have chronic migraine's your very likely to be extremely deficient in magnesium.

Read this paper. http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/119202031/abstract

I've been supplementing magnesium for a couple of years to no avail. Of course, it could be that grains (lectins/gluten) have been interfering with mineral uptake, so maybe I have been deficient despite supplementation. – Domer88 Jul 8 2010 at 17:37
How much magnesium do you supplement, and what form is it in? I've seen some evidence to suggest a few chelated forms together make a superior supplement. – Chris Jul 9 2010 at 2:07
I've tried mixing the various magnesium forms, including chelated and MgO. Once my neurologist put me on Topiramate he told me to back off on the Mg because it interferes with Ca uptake, and Topiramate can dimineralize the bones. – Domer88 Jul 9 2010 at 20:39
How much magnesium were you taking? – Chris Jul 11 2010 at 16:26

Sweet potatoes, rice, berries, squash are all good options.

I'd also suggest: avocados, nuts and dairy.

Add some berries, too. Lots of nutrients, antioxidants, and carbs in the form of sugar.
