I am 32 and have recently been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. My symptoms have been gradually increasing all summer long, reaching the point where I didn't feel like I could be active at all two weeks ago. My acupuncturist suggested I look into Paleo, and in the last two weeks, my pain and inflammation have drastically improved. I was able to go on a three mile hike on Saturday! I'm still having some pain and stiffness a few days per week, and I had a horrible flare last week, but overall, I feel better than I have in 8 or 9 months.

I'm attempting a Whole30 Immuno Challenge, but I'm still eating eggs, because my wife just bought a dozen duck eggs, and she was worried they'd go to waste. Anyway, my question:

  1. If you have been dealing with Autoimmune Disorders, to what level have your symptoms improved and how long have they been improving?

  2. What are the foods that you find trigger inflammation for you?

There is one folk reciepe that seem to help some people - 1tsp honey, 1 tsp cinnamon, put around the joint, do it every day for some time. – majkinetor Oct 13 2011 at 18:16

my wife has had RA for over 10 years now and went gluten free 3 years ago. considering she takes very little medication, she feels great. it's actually pretty amazing how she feels considering anyone else taking as little meds as she does would be bed ridden.

im trying to get her to do the paleo 30.. but she fighting hard as she feels she given up so much. but i think im wearing her down.

i told her.. if you do the paleo 30.. ill stop nagging you.. regardless of whether you keep doing it or now. i hope if she does.. she'll feels so good that she will commit.

i firmly believe you are on the right track. stay strong, stick to paleo 100%, and you will feel the difference.

I have IBS-D, SIBO, and leaky gut, female balding, along a number of other issues, so I have both auto-immune and inflammatory conditions in me... Since I started Paleo 5 weeks ago, I have seen drastic changes on all these problems. For IBS-D for one (my main problem), I now have diarrhea only once a week (I used to have diarrhea 4-5 times a day). When my gut fixes itself (it can take up to 2 years to heal the gut), I hope to stop having any symptoms.

I do not plan to get off of Paleo for the rest of my life of course. I know that some people expect a quick fix in 30 days, or in 6 months, and then get back to SAD, but the truth is, the only way to stay healthy is to stay in this diet and lifestyle forever. Otherwise, the bad things will come back eventually. It might take just a week, and I've heard cases that it took 6 months, but eventually, the bad stuff always come back.

I don't think I have any problem with paleo-allowed food intolerance though. Sure, I still get diarrhea once a week, but because it happens only every Saturday (4 weeks straight only happens on Saturdays, like clockwork), to me this sounds more like an "auto-immune build-up during the week", rather than something I ate on that day, or the day before (I can't pinpoint it to any food, since I eat different things each time). I just have to be patient for at least a year until my gut heals and my overgrown bacteria/yeast get back into balance.

Cutting out wheat and many of the carbs has been the best thing for me. I have problems almost immediately after eating wheat, and it takes a couple of days to settle down. If I go off low carb for a few days, I start to have inflammation problems but they go away immediately upon restarting a low carb diet.

Cudos to you. My mother has suffered from the same illness for over ten years. I have on numerous occasions suggested that she at least cuts out grains. But she won't listen to me. I hope you fully heal soon!

Wheat kills me or more precisely gluten. I am not celiac but I have autoimmune issues and when I fall off the wagon the three things that really set me off are wheat bread, beer(which I love sadly), and sugared baked goods like cake. I do ok on gluten free bread and things like quinoa. I know grains of all types are bad but when I fall off the wagon I would like to do as much damage control as I can.

I know! The thought of no more beer until my gut heals seems horribly, horribly wrong. – pixiedyke Oct 13 2011 at 0:12

I find I'm sensitive to eggs IF I eat too many, too often. Yolks have been fine for me, just that egg whites are problematic if I have them daily. Tomatoes in large quantities have been bothersome, but again--it's more if I eat them every day.

As for how much my symptoms have improved? Once I cut gluten (a while before going paleo) about 75% of my flares went away. Since going paleo, about 75% of the remaining flares went away. I can't say that I'm 'cured' (yet!!), but I feel so much better now it's really kind of unbelievable.

Best of luck to you! I know going paleo has been a godsend to me personally. I hope it is for you too.

i had arthritis in my left thumb for six yrs and sardine-can shoulders in the morning for 2yrs (morning shoulders that felt like having slept in a sardine can and painful to level down). a few months ago, was already eating paleo but plus fruits 3x a day, i read somewhere cutting out fruits, especially citrus helps, and so i did. the changes to my thumb happened within 12hrs - no more pain when bending the joint.

but soon after i started to have die-off symptoms (candida overgrowth) and so now i'm thinking any sugary foods would, in my body, cause a candida-related leaky gut and endotoxins end up traveling into my blood through the damaged intestinal lining and deposit themselves on my joints and then my immune system attacks them.

Mcdougall diet has a lot of success with rheumatoid arthritis so it probably has a lot to do with over consumption of polyunsaturated fats. I would limit your fats to just ruminant fats.

So no magical coconut oil or avocado? – pixiedyke Oct 13 2011 at 22:33
they both are probably fine in moderation but if you don't see improvements I would definitely eliminate them. – cliff Oct 13 2011 at 22:52
