I occasionally fast from 4pm to 8am and have, several times, had painful, "stuck" gas in my lower GI tract. It's the kind that just sits there & is hard to move out. Anyone else get this? It's typically gone the next morning, certainly after breakfast and a good old bowel movement.

I'm interested in what might be causing this - like, does fasting cause the bowel to stop peristalsis?

No, it doesn't stop. Mucus and dead bacteria still have to be moved out. – majkinetor Oct 14 2011 at 13:03

But eating a meal triggers peristalsis. So it does make sense that not eating will inhibit it. At least that's been the case for me. Which is why, as someone with IBS and a lot of trapped gas issues, I don't fast - I want to keep things moving as much as possible. I've been known to eat a meal just so I can pass some gas. – Renee Feb 13 2012 at 12:03

Try sleeping on your left side, so that the weight of your organs press down on your intestines, and then in the morning do a few easy yoga postures such as the Child Pose, and The Wind Relieving Pose as seen here; http://www.santosha.com/pavana.html

I get the same thing and my totally unscientific n=1 hypothesis is that it might be due bacteria "freaking out" and ramping up their activity (gas production) before they die off. I'm sure there's a thousand other possible explanations out there, this just what my lowly brain has been able to come up with as to why this happens.

It's probably something in your diet. Your body can't digest something. So the bacteria have to do it which leads to excessive methane production

Forgot to say fasting would make it worse because the bacteria have nothing else to do.

wow. i know this is way old, but for anyone wondering the answer to this i'd like to give it a go. fasting=lack of food. do this long enough and your body may wind up in starvation mode. the body perceives this as famine (danger!) and slows down the metabolism. slow metabolism=slow moving...uh...well you know. slow poop! knock off the fasting OR eat WAY more during your meal times.
