I'm new to Paleo, and still feeling my way around. I've seen some powerful testimonies - in words and photos - at a few blogs, but it would be super cool to have a huge list of Before and Afters here that folks could refer to when they are starting out or when they need a boost of inspiration.

Tell us how Paleo worked for you. Show your amazing Before and After photos.

Please inspire me and others to stay the course! It's tough jumping in when Conventional Wisdom says that eating red meat and fat are the worst things you could do to your health.

Thank you! Can't wait to see what folks post!

That is awesome progress! My before/afters aren't from Paleo. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to find this, but I'm glad I'm here now. – sherpamelissa Dec 15 2010 at 2:08

So here's me in August 2008 - weighing in at around 210 or so. (I didn't have anything more recent that showed me at the same weight, but it's current enough to do the trick.)

alt text

And here's me roughly two weeks ago, getting two tattoos at once! Here, I'm about 157.

I don't really have a lot of pictures of me, and being seated isn't the best shot, but you can see the difference, I think.

You can at least see my deep-rooted love of wearing black tshirts. Regardless of diet, my limited fashion sense will never change.

did your black t-shirt size go from a large to a medium? ;) – MikeD Jul 15 2010 at 14:55

@MikeD: XL to Medium! (I recommend the American Apparel shirts for the way they fit, FWIW.) @Grace: when I get my chestpiece I'll lift up my shirt for a pic. ;) – tattooedchef Jul 16 2010 at 10:36

SAD diet, 2008, 170 pounds

Had quit gluten, corn and soy, but still way too much sugar in my diet. Too thin because I was always sick. 125 pounds, 2010

Last week,4th of July. Nice middle ground, been Paleo 90/10 since January, working to make that 98/2 (Summer at the beach means a lot of BBQs, parties, eating out, bars and sitting at home would be the only way to be 100%).

This is NOT an after picture... It is a before and now picture.
Paleo has done so much more for my health than weight loss. I am no longer insulin resistant and I am happier with a better disposition on life (it can't fix all my crazy, but it has helped.) I just started a blog http://apaleoishlife.blogspot.com/ alt text

I don't have pictures, and I don't think I have any drastic differences in the way I look. But I know a lot has changed. I have a lot of energy, I actually want to do stuff. My fibromyalgia got better - I have less muscle pain, joint pain or "fibro fog". I am generally more positive and cheerful. My skin cleared and now I hardly ever have any breaks. My digestive system works better - no bloating, minimum gases, no constipation... and no bad smell in the bathroom.

I can go for hours without snacks or need to eat NOW. I feel good even with fasting periods, which I couldn't do before.

My muscles got stronger and bigger, I have much more definition.

hm... can't think of anything more. I will have blood tests in two weeks, I am really looking forward to check that up!

Resolution of fibromyalgia where traditional conventional medicine has no cures or effective drugs (lyrica s*cks) is nothing short of AMAZING. who knew so easy right? the SAD is suffocating the muscles of certain susceptible genetic types... Can't wait to hear the lab measurements later. please update? – grace Jul 16 2010 at 5:39

Aww, dip!

Not totally due to paleo, about half doing the traditional eat less "bad stuff" and move more thing. Paleo was just my transition to better, more enjoyable eating. I think the overall positive attitude, as shown by my two thumbs up, is all because of paleo though!

"Pre-Paleo" August 22, 2009. Weight: 163 lbs. Standard American Diet minus HFCS and hydrogenation.

Not terribly overweight, but I had very little definition and a bit of a belly.

Began strength training on the Powertec system Aug 1, 2010. Also began eating "Paleo" style Aug 9, 2010.

I've gained tremendous strength and my bodyfat % was measured at 10.1% a few weeks ago.

Mar 19, 2011, after 7 months Paleo and strength training 3x week. Weight: 150 lbs

Since this was one of the threads that really convinced me on getting started with paleo, I decided to add my contribution as well.

Before paleo I was somewhere above 100kg (I did not have a working scale at home in the beginning). I was eating bread/pasta in huge amounts, and still not feeling satisfied after a meal.

I have been mostly paleo for about 3.5 months now, with 2 weeks of non-paleo recently, and an occasional beer/wine/liquor/bread/pasta and other non-paleo stuff on social events.

In the first month I started with strict paleo in order to get my leptin sensitivity back to normal. In that month I lost about 10kg (mostly fluid I think; the biggest advantage was losing the "puffyness" in the face almost instantly.)

After that month I decided to go a bit less strict (social events etc), and the weight loss continued at a steady but slower pace, until I got to about 90kg. I loved the fact that I could skip a day of eating altogether if I did not feel like eating that day, instead of being dependent on food. (I think I was as addicted to food as I had been to cigarettes in the past.)

During my vacation, my weight increased again about 3.5kg, due to not being paleo at all. (I consider 3.5kg acceptable, because we consumed mostly bread/cheese/wine, since we were in France after all.)

Oddly enough, it looks like the recurring weight is not where it used to be (my belly), so I have got no idea where the extra weight went; maybe it's on my earlobes ? ;)

I have slowly been moving again to a slightly stricter approach, and my weight is dropping again (currently about 92kg). I also started doing some Tabata sprints as wel again (2 times/week).

I decided to post a morph of a before and after pic just to show everyone - especially myself - how well paleo has been for my body (next to healing IBS which I had been struggling with for 2 years, not snoring any more - the Mrs. loves this - , and being able to wear some tighter clothing without looking like a human "Lazy Boy" ;) )

Here we go (3.5 months, after a slip of about 2 weeks during vacation): alt text

I think I still have to lose about 10kg, but I will see where my body takes me... It looks like the belly fat is a bit more stubborn then the other fat, maybe because it has been there for about 10 years ?

My biggest paleo-sin is not getting enough sleep; I am coming from an average of about 3 to 5 hours, so I already made a lot of progress, but I still need to improve it... I think I am now probably sleeping about 6 hours on average.

After the initial six months of mostly paleo I plan on having my blood checked, introducing a moderate amount of carbs again (at a slow pace), and living a healthy life again...

If any of you are hesitating to try paleo, then just commit yourself to 30 days of paleo, and see where it takes you ! Good luck!

I don't have any pictures, I don't own a camera, LOL, but, I'll let the statistics speak for themselves

Pre Paleo (normal range in Parentheses) Total Chol (70-140)=249 Trigs*(<150*)=996 HDL*(>39*)=24 LDL*(<100*)=134 Chol Ratio*(<1.3*)=18.13 A1C*(<6*)=8.9 Weight(175)=209 % Body Fat(20)=30 Meds=Lipitor, Tricor, lisinopril, Metformin, 50u. Insulin daily Pants size 36 waist/32 leg

After 1 year Paleo (I follow Dr. Bernstein and Mark Sisson/Kurt Harris's style) Total Chol=107 Trigs=124 HDL=40 LDL=61 Chol Ratio=.89 A1C=5.1 Weight=174 %BF=12.3 Meds=35u. Insulin daily(Doctor took me off everything else) Pants size 30 waist/32 leg

It worked for me!

the 'good' HDL chol increased a ridiculously STELLAR 67%. WOW. no drug or pharmaceutical or herbal does that. (only diet) Excellent work Mike! WIth trigs of >> 500 the risk of pancreatitis was quite high and you saved it. Pancreatitis is when the pancreas basically blows up and requires insulin for life. Congrats again! I actually just had my first "progress" picture on Monday. This version is small and I'm blurred (I'm still too heavy to not be shy :P) but there is some progress:

alt text

I decided I was going to take my picture in the same place in the same color/similar outfit and in the same lighting because I don't want to be like those scam advertisers... but yeah, this is after one week actually being strict.

When I went from vegan to around 70/30 paleo (I wasn't supplying my own food) I went from around 270 to 230 pounds which is where I am in the January 3 picture. I did not have the mind to photograph myself then. Maybe it would have given me more motivation, but on the other hand, I'm kind of glad I don't have to see myself at that weight :P

I know I posted a "before and after" previously, but I did a little more tweaking (you can read about the entire process here) so I figured that an update would be in order.

Before

alt text

6 months later (first 3 "Paleo", next 3 "Primal")

alt text

It's also worth noting that I'm consistently hitting new PR's on all my lifts (65lb dumbbell curls, 295 bench, 100lb weighted pull up, 300+ for reps on squats and deadlift) and feel like an entirely new person. My diet is pretty low carb (sub 50gms/day) with moderate protein and high fat. I usually eat 2-3 meals and have been implementing 1-2 IF's (18-24 hrs including sleep) each week.

For the first time in my life, I feel like I'm free from the tyranny of food. This doesn't mean that I don't enjoy eating but rather that I am now able to fully enjoy a meal and then move on. I'm capable of simply being in the moment and can appreciate life's unfolding without the anxiety and need for constant stimulation that previously defined my experience. It is beautiful to feel contented whether I'm going on a walk, riding in the car, at work, or simply laying down on the grass watching the clouds go by.

Nine months ago I carried 92 pounds on a five foot two inch frame. I was too depressed and fed up with life to take care of myself, to feed myself.

Now I weigh 108 pounds. I gained half of the weight back on a lacto-paleo diet after discovering a gluten allergy, which I'm almost positive caused my mental disorder before manifesting itself as a gut problem. Now I'm fully grain-free dairy-free legume-free traditional Paleo, and I'm just so much HAPPIER than I used to be. I enjoy life more, and feel a better sense of connection with my friends and family and world.

I don't have any sexy ab pictures but here's me doing a handstand.

I held off for awhile, but might as well...

I'm not yet where I want to be (hoping to stay very solid around 250lbs or so), but I am getting there. This was me at 426lbs:
alt text

In late 2002, I went on Paleo for a year and lost 100lbs, in late 2003 I discovered the sport of Strongman:

alt text

In strongman, with Paleo, I felt like I could not eat enough. I eventually reintroduced all those foods that had been "off limits" and countered their effects (poorly) with tons of Fish Oil, fiber, and when I was really hurting, around 1gm of Ibuprofen a day. By 2008 when I went to Nationals I was 380lbs (This picture was snapped a month before Nationals at Epcot):

alt text

Shortly after Nationals I decided to "retire" from Strongman... I am one of those "overdo it" types and I had severely neglected my health and my family in my pursuit of collecting trophies (that now collect dust). I didn't change my eating habits, however, and stayed the same weight as when I competed - but I was losing muscle and getting fatter, my health problems were getting so severe that I didn't know what to do.

So about 2 years ago I went back to Paleo, remembering it was the only time in my life I wasn't plagued with leaky gut and fatigue. It wasn't with the express goal to lose weight - but I knew if I stayed diligent, the weight would come off... and it has. Today I'm much lighter than I was when I competed in Nationals (I experimented with a relaxed, higher starch diet for half of last year and ). I'm currently at 331lbs, utilizing Paleo principles, IF principles, and remaining quite low carb.

This plan has resulted in approximately .3lbs/day loss since Late November, including a few binges over new years and christmas (excluding those, it's been about 1/2lb a day). I know the water is gone now because I stabilize at a certain weight for 3-4 days, then I wake up 2-3lbs lighter (instead of waking up every morning 1lb lighter).

This picture is from a few months ago (before the starch experiment) and iirc I think I was around 330 here. So you get the idea of how I look today - except I have a great big beard now though...
alt text

So, hopefully in the very near future - you will see some new pictures from me, most notably after the next 30lbs comes off, the 30 after that, and the final 20 or so.

I've been reticent to do one of these because I came to paleo for autoimmunity and not for weight loss or body recomposition. My muscle/fat distribution has changed slightly, but the most drastic physical change for me has been my skin. I had horrible acne as a teen and it continued to a slightly lesser extent through my 20s.

In this photo, I'm 19. It's hard to tell because of the black and white, but I'm rather spotty on the face, back, and shoulders.

alt text

This photo was taken candidly this past December, after about 10 months paleo. (Makeup: just lipstick and eyeliner/shadow). Also note lack of allergic undereye bags.

alt text

Of course, I also learned how to groom my eyebrows in the intervening time.

Great topic. I'm showing this to people I know and pointing how how much healthier everyone looks, forget about the weight.

Some of us (like me) talk about hormone train wrecks, I guess now its called "metsyn," this is what that looks like-2006-

http://dietforhumans.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/oldteef.jpg

I'm about 300, shooting the Daytona supercross in 2006, my old job. I've been on synthroid for 6 years, and a lot of good that did. I've been to countless drs and experts, even universities to see experts. 15 years previous, the trouble started after a couple of years of prednisone, which nuked something.

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/4683_88770862191_632002191_1804409_4373519_n.jpg

Me after I found the right dr and low carb kinda Paleo but hadn't actually read about it yet.

http://sphotos.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc1/5931_108612567191_632002191_2097360_784956_n.jpg

I went as high as 315. I see a thyroid hormone doc and he finds too much to list. Thyroid quit, adrenals quit, cortisol zeroed out, high rT3, high insulin/trigs, low test, no DHEA, nothing right inside.

My doc had me do VLC as top priority, lean protein and veggies, moderate fat. He hasn't bought into Paleo. But I ended up Paleo to maintain and squeeze down a bit more, and it's working well lately.

I'm still on a lot of meds, and lower calorie requirements for ex-train wrecks is making refinement a challenge. When you can only eat 1,400/1,500 cal a day, getting everything you still need isn't simple.

I identify with Paleo and low carb in general. For me, carbs still hardly burn, they go right to fat storage. Paleo has answers that work, that's what draws me to it. People are talking about how the body works and how it was intended to work, and using the info.

I'm joining the gym this weekend due to my young colleague at work who is into leangains (my fault for showing it to him!) daring me to do it. I want to squeeze down another 15 and repair something inside, whatever that is.

Well this is my journey SO FAR. I started Paleo on January 1,2012 with a friendly email from my friend Ryan who thought I could benefit from the lifestyle. I am 6'1", I started out 362 lbs and I am currently 275 lbs. I have been large my whole life, always thought I would be until I read the "Primal Blueprint". After I read the first book I got every other Paleo book I could get my hands on and dove right in.

I went from a 44" waist to currently a 38". I don't think I have been a 38" since middle school. I went from 3xl shirts to a 2xl and now a few Polo shirts that are XL. That was also a big motivator was being able to walk into a store and buy clothes, instead of ordering them online.

I work on a tugboat where the diets are terrible even though the coast guard has strict medical guidelines for BMI. That was also always on the back of my mind. They strive for a BMI of 40 or under, even though still unhealthy, if they went any lower there would be no one running tugboats.

This is my journey so far, I havent cheated at all and I can't go back. My goal weight for now is 225. I think with hard-work and determination I can achieve that goal. My friends and family have been supportive. I have also introduced family members, friends, and strangers to the diet. They have also found success. Well keep fighting the good fight!

PS. Tattoos are Paleo right?

A real wake-up - Honesty Pictures are the best way to face the truth!!! When I really looked at my "Before" pics I realized how overweight I had become after being so active for most of my life and in good shape. I researched a Paleo/Primal way of life and once I had the facts and the science I knew it was for me. After that everything was easy!!! I went from 238 pounds at my heaviest to 188 pounds and 10-11 percent body fat. I feel better than I did 20+ years ago!

The following books led me to the truth: Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes, Deep Nutrition by Catherine Shanahan, Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson, The New Evolution Diet by Arthur De Vany to name a few. I advise people to read many books and pieces of research in order to get the whole story and to allow them to form the basis of their foundational beliefs. If this is not done then it is a "Fad Diet" and usually will not stick...... Best wishes to all.... Off to have some fun!!! :)

Hey. I'm strictly on paleo since September and I've already lost about 32 lbs:). I have never been so slim before and I feel AWESOME! I don't have problems with getting up early on morning (as I used to have before), I sleep well (I have never slept good before), I have loads of energy. I train thai boxing, my body is now about 10% of fat. What do you think about my change? Before paleo my weight was about 146 lbs, now it's about 114 lbs. I'm 66.9 inches tall. What do you think? Should I keep my present weight or lose/gain some weight now?

Hi everyone I've been on the paleo diet for only 20 days and it has made such a big impact in my life so far. I'm absolutely in love with this diet! I started this diet May 1st in order to hopefully have a bikini body by June but I was also looking to permanently change my eating habits. My job requires me to have a lot of energy through out the entire day so I was also looking for a healthy diet that can keep me energized. This diet is PERFECT and just so amazing. I'm one of those people that loves feeling full and this diet allowed me to feel full and I still lost weight! I'm 5'4 and weighed about 120 before, which I know isn't big but I really hated my body shape I was very pear shaped I am now between 105-110 pounds and am finally on a diet that I don't feel like I'm starving myself! I do occasionally cheat (I love chocolate and coffee) but it didn't matter since the rest of my meals were healthy. Thank you person who came up with this diet! lol

Before(excuse the mess i was in the process of moving!): 5'4 120 Poundsalt textalt text After(finally moved in lol): 5'4 107 Poundsalt textalt text

You should read Why Women Need Fat- the pear-distribution is desirable for health and also considered more attractive by most normal men in studies across the world. There are a lot of women on here who have struggled with EDs, which is probably why you might be getting downvotes. Being too thin has huge consequences. A lot of these women are still struggling to get their menstrual cycles and other hormonal systems back into balance. The "pear" fat is very important hormonally. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub May 21 2012 at 15:12

I completely respect your opinions but everyone has their visions of what they desire to look like & personally I prefer how my body is now. I know that pear shapes are more desirable, I used to get a lot more male attention before than now but that's not the reason I decided to go on this diet. I personally prefer more athletic builds. So far I've been completely fine health-wise, I certainly don't suffer from an eating disorder & I definitely am not too thin. I come from a family of very thin women and my body before was bigger compared to the rest of my family. – Natalie May 23 2012 at 3:08

Its rude that people are commenting that she looked 'better'... Our culture is horrid towards women - you're either too curvy or not curvy enough.. theres barely any in between, ugh.. I think you're gorgeous!! Whatever makes you feel like a goddess, go with it! – Sloan May 30 2012 at 13:42

Before: Age 42, 212 lb, not "fat" but starting to establish a middle-aged gut.

Now: Age 43, closing in on 180 lb, looking healthy and fit but with maybe 8-10 more lb to go to get to looking "lean" by paleo standards. Can't see my abs yet but I'm close.

The really interesting part -- to me -- is that I lost 20 of those lb in the first 10 weeks or so of doing this. No "diet plan" ever conceived by modern science (or the modern mass media) works even half as well as eating real food and getting outside for a bit every day. It's really remarkable to realize how simple it is.

I love the last part of what you said... I'm in week 5 of paleo and lost 8 lbs without really trying or ever going hungry. – stephthegeek Jul 13 2010 at 22:34

I have no photos. But I started Paleo at 255. I'm at 205 now, trying to break the 200 barrier. I haven't been sub200 since high school! p.s. I'm not super strict paleo. I try as much as possible to stick to it... but I cheat a lot :)

Here's my before/after. I initially started not knowing about evo/paleo/primal... so the loss was slow but used it exclusively for last 2+ yrs after joining Xfit and doing the nutri certification w/Robb (and Nicki) to lower body fat from 25+% to <20% now. drbganimalpharm.blogspot.com/2009/10/… – grace Jul 16 2010 at 5:53
