Is coconut oil known to induce acne if eaten? I just bought a jar of refined oil and I'm afraid I'll start breaking out (I had acne when I was younger but I'm 95% clear most of the time). I don't know if the health benefits are worth the possible acne breakouts.

Obviously I made that up.... however if you google 'coconut oil acne' you'll find hundreds of anecdotal reviews from people who have used coconut oil to improve acne. Whether this be by consuming it orally or using it topically or both.
Coconut oil is an antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial, so I assume it has the ability to correct certain imbalances in some people and that improves their acne.
Personally I found applying it directly to my face worked well short term but then my acne became much worse than it has ever been, so I stick to simply eating the stuff - this has improved my acne.
Most people seem to think virgin (unrefined) coconut oil is the way to go, however whilst it may be better I still think there would be benefits to using refined coconut oil.
I would say that IF acne is somehow related to the health of our intestinal tract, it is also very likely consuming coconut oil will cause INITIAL flare ups. But in the long run it may actually be helping. Coconut oil is chock full of lauric acid, which a lot of bacteria and microbes don't enjoy so much. Pretty much every dermatologist i've been to (which has been lots of them) warned about initial flare-ups caused by acne medications. Personally none of the medications ever did anything at all (curiously, paleo is.. slowly clearing me up) and I never experienced any flares. But their warnings were based on the idea that acne is likely microbial in origin, and as they die acne temporarily becomes worse before it gets better.
I like to think of unrefined coconut oil as a gastrointestinal nuclear warhead. But who knows.
Good question. Never thought of that but since I switched to strict paleo and started cooking with lots of coconut oil I've noticed more acne on my back then I've ever had. I've never had any, and now it's common. I'll cut out the coconut oil for awhile and see what happens.
I use coconut oil on my skin exclusively, and consume it every day along with other delicious fats, and I rarely have acne anymore. I used to always get a little flare up when I was pre-menstrual, but with the exception of the couple of times a year a random pimple pops out, my skin is just clear. Every body is different, and it's definitely best to start out slowly with coconut oil, because it can cause some detox symptoms. Be sure to commit for the long haul to give your body a chance to adjust and move past any initial detox reactions.
CO ON my skin is awesome. When I consumed a lot of CO a few years back, I broke out pretty badly for the first time since I went low carb in 2007.
I'm not sure why because I regularly use palm kernel oil -- it has a very similar fatty acid profile to CO -- to no ill-effect. I would think if it were some sort of allergy to something in the coconut that's not in the PKO, I would react to putting it on my skin.
I developed rosecea (red mask) in my fortys, that is not supposed to have cure. It has nothing to do with drinking alcohol; except make it worse. I keep it controlled using a prescription of "Metrogel" (topical treatment). And the Dermatologist says to not use any moisturizers or anything with oil in it on my face. If I do, I break out. So I haven't been for 10 years with no problems. When beginning to take virgin coconut oil my face started breaking out, so I stopped. Maybe, like you say it would take a period of adjustment. It might even cure the rocecea. ? I'm just reluctant to start using it again.
