Hello,

My blood and urine tests came out and the results are not good. The doctor said that i have high cholesterol - it should be 6.2 and it is 7.2, also i have ketones in the urine and bacteria, she said to try a diet and wait a month - if the results are not better they will have to put me on drugs! I am 25 female and have been eating primal paleo for more than a year. Do you think I have to worry? I will deffinitely make again the tests and I think they have to test again which cholesterol is elevated.

What do you typically eat? – cliff Oct 17 2011 at 12:27
Please be more specific about what you mean by primal paleo. If you're doing VLC then this may well be "normal". If you're higher carb I'd be concerned. What did the doc say about bacteria specifically? – Evelyn aka CarbSane Oct 17 2011 at 12:44
Also what were your LDL and HDL numbers? Triglycerides? – vdh1979 Oct 17 2011 at 13:22
I mean I eat a lot of animal fat, meat, organs, vegetables and some fruit. Occasionally I eat other things but really rarely :) She didn't say anything else than what she said - bacteria. Also that I must have been very hungy to have ketones in the urine... She said that the triglycerides are normal - only the cholesterol is elevated but I think they haven't tested it separately - LDL and HDL but as a whole. – maniuni Oct 17 2011 at 15:33

Keep your diet, lose your doctor. Whoever this person is, he or she is not communicating with you properly. Since the mainstream is still fixated on cholesterol, I guess you could give your doctor a pass for even doing a cholesterol test, but he or she should be able to converse with you well enough to understand there is a perfectly good reason for you to have ketones in your urine. The rather ridiculous generalization of 'bacteria' makes me suspicious. If you had 'bacteria' they immediate write you a prescription for antibiotics. I don't like what they do to gut health, but they do get rid of bacteria, and your average doc isn't going to want you to wait around with a bacterial infection for a month.

If you actually feel bad, get a 2nd opinion- specifically on whether or not you have a bacterial infection. Things can turn bad really quickly if you have one and wait to treat it. The rest of what your doc said doesn't make any sense and isn't anything to worry about.

Travis writes: "Your cholesterol's not really that high. If you want to lower it, stop eating butter/cream."

Travis, Dietary cholesterol does not affect blood levels:

This totally contradicts Weston A. Price and all the main proponents of Paleo.

It's not the dietary cholesterol, it's the myristic and palmitic acids' effect on hepatic LDL recycling. – Travis Culp Oct 17 2011 at 23:37

Your cholesterol's not really that high. If you want to lower it, stop eating butter/cream. Your implication is that a doctor can prescribe drugs and you have to take them. Presumably, you wouldn't be on Paleo Hacks if you bought into the pack of lies that the medical-pharmaceutical complex has been spewing for decades.

That means ur on a ketogenic diet and produce ketones. Since you describe yourself primarily as a meateater, it's not surprising. Why not just call back your doctor and say, "Look, ketones are normal on a ketogenic diet. It's gluconeogenesis: Biochemistry 101."

As for high cholesterol (279 mg/dL), u need the components to do proper analysis. But it's common for those who VLC to see their TC increase susbsantially, due to simultaneous increases in LDL and HDL. About 25% of people who low-carb experience this. You need to defend yourself by pointing out your (presumably) low TG, high HDL, Type A LDL particle size, low Lp(a), normal BP, normal FBG and A1c, etc.

Ok, so I will make another test, I hope it will show the particle size – maniuni Oct 19 2011 at 5:36

Those numbers don't make sense for a "cholesterol" number. Total cholesterol is measured on a scale between 120-300+. It may be a "urine Ph" number, which would make sense, showing a higher-than-normal urine acidity.

I would ask for those numbers again, so you can actually see what you're working with.

Total Cholesterol

Your total blood cholesterol is a measure of LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and other lipid components. Doctors recommend total cholesterol levels below 200

Total Cholesterol Category

Less than 200 Desirable

200 - 239 Borderline High

240 and above High

As an addendum, personally, I would NOT take cholesterol-reducing drugs for any reason. The drugs they give to manage cholesterol are known to have side effects that can significantly affect neurological function.

I think the cholesterol was given in mmol/l units as is typical in europe. – Jan Oct 17 2011 at 15:56
My mistake -- didn't realize until I caught the profile that it was European measure. S – Firestorm Oct 17 2011 at 15:59
They're SI units and are also used in Canada. – Stephen Feb 28 2012 at 2:28
