This thread is for anything Paleo/Primal/Ancestral related that you know of in Belgium.

Supermarkets, farms, doctors, gyms, anything goes. Please create one answer per item group that you know of.

(Since Belgium is the only region I care about, I hope this catches on and other people will create threads for their region)

I'd really like to find an easy place to get good eggs. Would also-worm-fed eggs exist in the marketplace? – wmertens Oct 18 2011 at 19:10
Only local farmers, or you gotta do it yourself. – Korion Nov 1 2011 at 20:33
Grow your own eggs! That's what we do, easy, only need some space! – Pieter D Nov 2 2011 at 10:12

I found beautiful large dark-yellow-yolk pastured eggs at our local farmer's market. They're cheaper than supermarket eggs too! – wmertens Jan 3 2012 at 8:59
Same experience for me, wmertens. I used to pay 20 cents for every egg, and they were fabulous eggs (gelly egg white and orange yolk, delicious taste). Too bad I don't do well with eggs :D. – Korion Mar 5 2012 at 18:51

GREAT meat to find at veeakker. They are situated in Leuven but have other places they deliver to. Service is great, the beef/lamb/fish (e.g. wild alaska salmon) couldn't be higher quality. The prices can be high but you can always supplement your diet with organic, cheaper meat. Maybe even horse meat.

You can go to the BioPlanet to find practically everything you'd need, except for grass-fed stuff and probably bones too.

If you live near Grimbergen there is the "Groentehof" that have GREAT vegetables and fruits (this store closed because the owners retired, but they still sell apples). And for supplements, I just use iHerb.

To be honest, I never go to any supermarket. Just the butcher and vegetables at the organic store.

I get oysters from crown prince on iHerb. Some supermarkets (eg. Delhaize) also carry organic fruit and Haagen-Dazs (okay not that paleo but it comes close). Oysters can also be found in the Delhaize but it's crazy expensive and you have to open the shells yourself which broke 4 of my knives :).

Did you ever have to pay customs handling fees (e.g. the 10€ TaxiPost charges) with iHerb shipments? Which shipping option do you use? – wmertens Nov 30 2011 at 5:32
Yeah, most of the time. I use DHL. – Korion Nov 30 2011 at 8:26
I use Air Shipping now, it always takes 10 days and it's only 4-6 dollars. In the long run, it makes me win money. – Korion Mar 5 2012 at 18:51
Thanks. And liver? – Sam May 28 2012 at 16:47
Just from the butcher. – Korion May 28 2012 at 21:07

Butter: You can get Kerrygold butter in at least Colruyt, Carrefour and Delhaize. Colruyt is cheapest if you buy per 4.

Note that Kerrygold may or may not be really good grassfed butter. The Quilt tested several batches and they had varying K2 content :-(.

What about Rochefort Butter? – MarcelaTizo Dec 3 2011 at 15:07
Good question :-) No idea... I actually know of no butter that has a "from cows fed grass only" claim. I wonder if there's enough grass in Rochefort. – wmertens Dec 11 2011 at 20:37
In most bioshops (e.g. Het Natuurhuis in Antwerpen) you can find "grasboter". Delicious, dark yellow and creamy butter made from grass fed cows. zuiverzuivel.nl/producten/boter/… – kobayashi Apr 13 2012 at 13:38
@kobayashi OMG thank you I'll go check it out :-) – wmertens Apr 19 2012 at 7:15
So you can get grasboter in Terrasana in Antwerpen and the bioshop in Wilrijk (where it's cheaper) - it tastes sooo goooood. – wmertens Jul 10 at 19:57

Jack O'Shea's in Brussels has grass-fed organic meat.

http://www.ourobouros.be/: Orrobouros is an organic vegetable farm in Flanders. They have stands on market day in Jette and Place Chausseur in Brussels.

This time of the year, Colruyt has nice and very reasonable priced game meat (epsicially the frozen meat is great)

Kerrygold is widely available. At Bioplanet they have Dutch grass fed butter, but more expensive. Bioplanet bacon is good.

Grass-fed/pastured meat is difficult, but as Korion said, Veeakker has nice but expensive 'natuurpunt' meat.

I haven't tried it, but 'Modderbaard' has a nice blog with lots of Dutch grass fed meats. Maybe worth trying.

I know there are some cross fit gyms around.

I don't know of any doctors at all, I only know of one physical therapist who is paleo inspired: me! ;)

Lidl also has some game meat available at the moment. Deer for example, €15/kg – Sam Nov 23 2011 at 13:46
@Alteration, I'm pretty sure that that's just farm-raised deer. I know someone who has a deerfarm in West-Flanders, I need to ask him what he feeds them. I know the deer in the park love the acorns I throw them, I doubt they get that though. – wmertens Nov 30 2011 at 5:46
@Pieter, shouldn't you have a website so people can find the one paleo inspired physical therapist? :-) – wmertens Nov 30 2011 at 5:47
@wmertens, why is it stated as 'Wild' than? And is there a communication method like private messages on this forum? – Sam Dec 6 2011 at 11:09
@Alteration, actually I don't know what the laws are around calling something "wild". I just have a hard time believing that all that deer meat in the supermarkets was shot in the wild... – wmertens Dec 11 2011 at 20:43

In Antwerp I found a small Euro-Asian supermarket in the Driekoningenstraat that has cheap ghee (€5/500g) and coconut oil (€3/500ml). They also have lots of exotic vegetables and very sticky rice :)

Caveats:

  • The ghee has added ethyl butyrate, presumably for flavor. This annoys me but using it as a cooking oil doesn't pass the flavor. There's also no indication of grassfedness.
  • The coconut oil is yummy but comes in a plastic bottle. In Belgium this means it's a solid :-) so you need to heat the bottle and transfer the contents to a jar.

So in general I would say, check out your local asian supermarkets.

@wmertens: indeed, asian shops are good resources. In Leuven they have good plantains (baking bananas) and very good shredded coconut (in different varieties). Should be only coconut, nothing added, but you never know... – Pieter D Nov 30 2011 at 14:58

Can you guys please post some meal plans? Just curious what works out for you guys :)

Thanks

We basically eat french cuisine and skip all the flour or sugar related items... A quiche is still super yummy without the crust. Breakfast is eggs, berries+yoghurt, rice flour pancackes (with bacon and shredded cheese), leftovers, pieces of cheese /dried sausage etc. Lunch for me is company restaurant where I avoid flour, omega 6 and sugar. Dinner is highly variable. – wmertens Dec 11 2011 at 20:47
I just throw meat from veeakker in there, random veggies that I seem to tolerate well, occasionally berries, and steam it. I then add around 4 tbsp of coconut oil to the meal because I love it, and a boatload of turmeric and cayenne pepper. It's tasty and works great. Today I made bone broth for the first time, and you can be sure it's gonna become a staple for me (I'll try to eat bone broth at every meal now). – Korion Mar 5 2012 at 18:59

In addition to Asian stores, I find African stores to be a great help as well! Spices, alternative flours, oils... The ones I shop at are called "Kausar Ethnic Beauty" (yes, they sell makeup and wigs as well :p)

I'm trying to find some grass-fed beef in Belgium. Can someone explain veeakker to me? They deliver to the food store? Do you know if any speak english and/or are open on the weekends. I live in Mons, so by a quick glance, it seems I'll be driving a little. Thanks!

Hi Jen, Veeakker does [delivery rounds](veeakker.be/V3_1/index.php?p=verkoopp) and you can order from them or you can go to one of the shops they deliver to and buy from there. You can even order and let them deliver to a shop. I would think that around Mons there would be a system like that as well - let us know if you find it. Finally, Delhaize sells irish and scottish beef, I would think they have a higher chance of being grass-fed although maybe not grass-finished. – wmertens Jul 10 at 20:04
