For those that do eat bone broth--how much do you consume a day? Also at the beginning did you have die off symptoms?

if i have it i live off it practically, looooove it...but the time with a 65+hr a week job its like once a month – Mallory Oct 19 2011 at 17:49
I'm with Mallory. I don't always have it made (more often in winter) but when I have it on hand I use it in some fashion in every meal--soup, stew, sauce, etc., and it's always fabulous. – Nance Oct 19 2011 at 19:13

I don't think broth causes die-off (this is GAPS diet stuff) - I think die-off happens when you start starving bacteria, i.e. initially cutting out carbs or adding probiotics. Per the GAPS Guide, die off can be managed by weaning off offending foods slowly and introducing probiotics slowly. Bone broth is just a healing food, a salve, if you will. The excess fat may be what might cause a little extra digestive juice.

Die off happens when you starve bacteria or add probiotics (capsules or fermented foods) into the diet or anything else that kills bacteria. No reason I can think of that bone broth would cause die off.

When I make it and keep it in the fridge all gelled up I eat about .5 to 1 cup per day. Die off symptoms I have no clue about. What are you trying to kill as it were?

Die off symptoms = diarrhea Similar things happen to me. Indeed, sometimes I can hear the water in my body rushing to where I don't want it to be after drinking bone broth. I have tried a few things- like making a soup with carbohydrates in the hopes of being able to integrate bone broth into my life, but so far I haven't found anything that fixes this problem. – August Oct 19 2011 at 18:04
No die-off symptoms from broth; in fact, it seems to heal anything that's wrong with my GI tract. I'm more apt to get diarrhea if I eat dairy. – Nance Oct 19 2011 at 19:14
@ August, how fast are you drinking the broth? If I suck it down I get stomach gurgling and sloshing, but if I sip it off of a spoon, I take it in slowly enough that I don't get any sloshing. – Happy Now Oct 20 2011 at 8:30
I've tried it both ways, especially with my recent attempts to make soup with it. It is still noticeable enough when sipped off a spoon. – August Oct 20 2011 at 15:44

I'm pregnant, so I'm pretty diligent right now about drinking 1-2 cups a day, plus anything I add to recipes.

I just read an article that people with leakt gut might have a problem with the gylcine in the bone broth - and that could be what causes some symptoms of the die-off. I just started and I am drinking approx 32 oz a day- agree about the mason jar usage.
How have you coped with the gamey smell of the broth? I have people in my family that the crock pot smell makes them sick to their stomach. Using grass fed beef bones. I am going to try and add bay leaves to see if that helps with the smell.

About a pint a day if I am fasting, less if I am not. Mostly because mason jar are handy to store it in.

About a pint on most days - I mix in different veggies, meats, and spices. Not positive about die-off but it gave me a stomach ache when I first started and now I'm fine.

I drink it like water! It's refreshing when it's cold. :) I also cook the bone broth with veggies too, so it doesn't just taste like fat and gelatin.

My broth is a solid gel when it is cold. – Sean Oct 19 2011 at 19:19

2-3 large mugs per day, not including the soups I eat. I would like to know what is the ideal amount. The smell gets bad for me too, hopefully I won't get sick drinking it.
